i just replaced my standard h4 low beam with some phillips +80 vision...... did not change the h1 highbeam globes however

i dont know if it was like it before or has just happened now however i noticed that when i put my highbeams on the h4 globe lights up brighter as it should however the highbeam globe does not actually come on....

i checked one side only and the bulb is not blown.... un pluged and pluged it the plug back the other way thinking mayb it was the wrong way but still nothing...... if one side is blown will both sides not work????? what would be the most likely cause of this???????

also what bulb is better the phillips x-treme vision +80 or the phillips diamond vision?????
i have the x-treme +80 for my lows atm and was gunna upgrade my highs once i fix this problem and was wondering what would be better to get//////

Check the highbeam relay which I think is in the engine bay. Do a search on here for which bulbs are better. Another choise is the Narva BluePower (aka Osram Night Breaker). These are on sale at the moment at Repco.

but wouldn't the relay cause the high beam to not work at all????? as i said the h4 lows still go brighter and the highbeam indicator comes on on the dashboard........ whereabouts under the bonnnet would i find the relay??? near one of the headlights??? near the fuse box???? how do i test if it works?????

RElays are in a box near the battery - little diagrams on the lid of the box atempt to explain what the relays and fuses within are for. Swap a relay for something that seems to work (eg horn) for the headlamp relays (hi beam and low beam) - most of the relays (if not all) are identical.

Relays are a kind-of switch - they just use a low current to activate a high-current circuit (having high current running thru a switch tend to burn out the switch). If relay is crook, it is possible that its stuck OFF or stuck ON.

If that isn't the problem, check your earths on the headlights. Seen this happen before with both headlights and tail lights. Turn high beam on and wriggle the wires where they connect to the body work. When you wriggle the right one, the high beam will magically work again. Disconnect, clean and reconnect.

was loose connections..... however i dropped a bulb and broke the filament so now i have one highbeam that works and one that doesnt.....

better than none that work.....

good excuse to upgrade the highbeams too!

Just did a search to find this thread.
My issue is the lights come on on high beam when I pull the lever in but they dont stay on so I have to hold the lever in to keep high beam on.
I only just found this out as haven't driven outside urban area for a while until recently.
I suspected a relay problem so until I get a chance to check, can I assume it is a dud relay?

Does it click when you pull the stalk back? Pulling it lightly will turn it on but you won't want to hold it there for a long time as it will fry your wiring as that keeps the lowbeam on as well (that is, 60W dedicated high beam, 60W high beam with 55W low beam in the H4 combo on each side totalling 350W). When you pull it back far enough to click, it actually turns off the low beam part of the H4 bulb.

I just went to check about the click & now they are working!
Because I don't drive this car much as it's my wife's I think the issue may have just been a sticky lever & when I found resistance on the lever I have just flashed the lights rather than pulling further back to fully complete the action...& make the click.
A mechanic has had this steering wheel off recently to fit a special wheel device for my son as he has a disability so maybe that had something to do with it. There was major resistance there before obviously for me to think I had pulled all the way back.
Thanks for the reply.
