Hey guys, I found a replacement bumper for my car at the wreckers, I'm gonna get it painted and fitted but to keep costs down I was wanting to prep it for painting myself, what is needed to be done to make it ready for painting? I'm assuming Im going to have to strip/sand the paint, but what chems and grit sandpaper would I need, and is there anything I should/shouldn't be doing?

Ask the guy who will do the painting how he wants it prepped. That way you will not be wasting your time or make extra work for the painter.

depends on how he is going to do it, he may not want you to take the other paint off, he may just want you to rough it up with sand paper.

just ask the guy you getting to paint it how much the price differance is between giving him a preped bar ready to paint or getting him to do the lot you will prob find there aint much differance if any as its only a bar its not like he has to prep a whole car wich takes time, preping a bar weather painter already or in the raw aint a big job!!!!

Mate been there done that. You'll save $50-$80 on doing prep work yourself BUT they will NOT give a guarantee on there paint as you did the prep. With all the effort you gotta put in (I'm pretty anal when I sand things down) materials etc, Pay the $50-$80 more and then your guaranteed if the paint bubbles or whatever it's been there prep work which could of caused it. if they can shift blame to you your down shit creek without a paddle

Pretty much unanimous then - don't touch it until you talked to the painter - you would probably pay the money you save for the prep materials anyway!
