Hi,
It is pouring rain in good 'ol townsville, and i had to go an pull my mates falcon out of flood water. (gotta love magnas) However, this is the first time magy has been in rain this hard for about 1 year, and i now have a swimming pool all down my passenger side carpet. I also notice it gets slightly damp when i wash my car, and subsequntly, it is getting a bit of a smell. Right now it is very very wet (pooling) in the carpet.
I noticed that the plastic cover that goes where the windscreen wipers are, is lifting from its seal on the windscreen, My question is: Will this seal lifting cause the carpet to flood, or should i look elsewhere?
Cheers

My KJ has leaked at the very top corner under the dash, appears to have rusted thru in a couple of small spots. Drivers side leaked about 18 months ago and required carpet/interior out and silicone. Then about 2 months ago the passenger side did the same and its a prick of a job as fan and ducting and whatnot had to come out.

Pour some water over the windscreen and climb in and pop your head under the drivers footwell and poke around as far up and forward as you can and see if any water drips thru.

You can try to dry carpet in the car, but its easier to pull it out and rip the underlay off, bin it, sit carpet in the sun and go to a carpet place and get some underlay offcuts from their bin and use it as new underlay.

had the same issues as you on my old car. underneath those plastic bits near the windscreen wipers theres a square piece of plastic which from memory has a sort of foam seal around it. just need to silicone around that area and it should stop the leaking. hope that helps

how hard is it to get the carpet out? i am guessing front seats out and is that it?

so yours was an actual rust hole, where exactly was it?

so i do or dont have to remove the plastic around the wiper? can i just squeez some silicone under the lifting part and that will do? cheers

Silicone under the plastic was my first "fix"

Turns out it didnt work :)

And yes they were both actual rust holes, looked OK but when water was poured on the windscreen you could see a small drip and when I poked it more water came thru.

Carpet out is front seats, console, rear seat bottom and scuff panels. Not a huge job.

i am hoping that i have got to it before it got to be a rust hole, just hoping that the silicone will fix it.:pray::pray:

Hey Bellto,

I've just bought black carpet for my AWD from Pickerings which should be arriving today or tomorrow. The gray stuff is coming out if you want it. It's in very good condition and should just clip right on into your car. The only thing is that cause mine is an AWD the center arch in the carpet will be wider than your FWD so if it's on yours, you'll be able to depress it in, in some places but you can always fill the gap with foam. Offer is there if you want it.

EDIT: For carpet change, it's front seats out, rear squab out and scuff panels. Remove old, throw new in. Tuck carpet under center console and B pillars, clip it in and refit seats and squab. Took me an hour the first time.

And I don't know what why I'm thinking you have to unbolt the seatbelts from the floor too.. But I might have it confused with another car.

Guys, DONT USE SILICONE on cars, it is for boats (although with that much water you may be wondering if you should take it our fishing or skiing)

Use Sikaflex or similar, silicone is acidic and will cause rust in no time flat

oh sorry sikaflex is what i was thinking. i knew it was somethin that started with S. but yeah u have to actually take the plastic bits around the wipers off. if its leakin where i think it is ull see that the square bit underneath is all loose and muddy. shouldnt take longer than 10 min to fix. let us know how u go with it :)

I have this exact problem in my wagon, rust hole in the top left hand corner of the fire wall, very common 3rd gen problem according to my panel beater mate, says he's fixed plenty at work and his uncle had the same problem in his 3rd gen sedan.

I had the dash out to clean the evaporator and to look for that water leak and found the glue that holds the fire wall in has started to crack in that corner and rusted because its not painted under the sealer. Looks like its going to be a major operation to fix properly so for the time being I just sloped as much windscreen sealant in there as I could, I used windscreen sealer because it doesn't set hard like some silicones and as madmagna stated if you are going to use silicone make sure its neautral not acidic otherwise you will have much bigger problems in the near future
