Hey all
I know this has been discussed before somewhere, and using search, haven't found anything really useful.
At the moment my car is sitting with a mechanic who informed me that during the gearbox oil change, metal pieces came out. (shit)
So, i guess I am in the look out for a manual gearbox to swap it with. I rather not use another highly used 2nd hand one. And since 3.5l or 3l gearboxes are rare as (especially when near new condition) I was wondering if a 380 gearbox would fit a TH? Im sure someone would have attempted it and would like to hear more from them.
Is it a straight swap from the current manual gearbox? Are they easier to get than Magna ones?
Any info would be appreciated...
Also anyone know of a good gearbox specialist that could look at my current box and fix it?

Why? I thought the 380 manuals were a lot rarer, also I think the ratios are a bit different.

380 manuals are alot rarer (as said) because they are no faster that the 5 speed tippy, and they use more fuel (according to mitsubishi.)
somebody on here was attempting a 6 sp conversion not so long ago, do remember who though.

No-body was "attempting" it, merely "thinking" about it. for someone to "attempt" something they'd have to have all the components there. i.e. I attempted an engine conversion by buying said motor and putting it in, if I don't have motor, then I'm thinking about it..
Anyway, WAY rarer then a 3rd gen manual and gear ratios are also very different.
Possibly look into getting yours rebuilt or contact Madmagna.

The only difference between a 3.5 box in a TJ/L and a 380 box is the diff ratio. All other ratios are identical.

Someone did do a six speed manual conversion, I read it on here and on mca he was a member on both. He used a vw or a audi box it didnt fit so he took the gears out made a custom box or something. It cost him 10g, if you search both forums hard enough you will find.

Correct, But I'm sure someone was "talking" about bringing in a 6sp 6g7 gearbox from the states (eclipse?) not a fully custom one.

Lol i brought that up with you at a meet as a hypothetical, aka, would it be possible to slap a 6spd 300gt box on a second gen 6cyl, but never mentioned it on here :P

why dont you take the cover off the box and see whats wrong... if its driving ok could be something minor breaking down... i had this before.. input shaft bearing was buggered.. chunks of metal stuck to the plug.. was a cheapish fix... box out of the car though to pull cover off and have a look.. but i wouldnt go ditching the box just yet..

lol Not unusual! lol
Missed shifts and graunched synchros often put bits of metal into the oil. Unless the bits that came out are large and recognisable - like whole diff teeth - and the box still shifts correctly, I wouldn't worry about it. Do another change in a year's time - yourself - and catch the bits that come out. Use a tea strainer over the drain hole, as the oil runs out. Put the contents of the strainer on some white paper towel. Have a good look, small goldy coloured bits are from synchro rings, chrome coloured bits are from gears, diff or bearing. You can use a magnet to separate the two colours, iron based stick, other bits don't.
As the gearbox is splash lubricated, there is no oil pump to circulate bits of metal. They sink to the bottom and stay there, out of harms way (unlike an auto box).
Ask the mechanic to show you the bits that came out, if he saved them.

The 6sp conversion on MCA was an audi flappy paddle auto box, though when he sold his car it mysteriously disappeared! (Methinks bullshit!)
Anyways, the Mitsubishi Eclipse GT has a 6G75 MIVEC with a 6G7-compatible 6sp manual gearbox! There were available in Eclipses from 2006 onwards!
http://car-part.com/ Search "Mitsubishi Eclipse, 2006, Transmission" - It's the 3.8 MT model. Approx cost is $1800-2200 USD + shipping!

I ain't ditching it. I will get it checked once I have the other gearbox in. ;)

As I stated I have a good 3.5 box here, boxes for a 3.5 are rare these days with so many being used for conversions etc etc
You can rebuild what you have, as I said on MSN you will not get a qood quality box done under a grand and will look prob mid 1000's
Do you know how many k's your box had done before you got it, could be a case it has done well over 200k's
Unlike auto's, manual boxes do not just die, if you have had some large bits come out, most likely some parts of the bearing cage. If this is the case, just leave it in there, put in the new fluid and keep using it while you are looking for a new box. I did this to mine 5000k's ago as I had the same, still no issues and remember I tow a lot (heavy trailer and boat)
