Gates releases a NEW belt diagnostic tool into the market
Since the late 1990s, auto manufacturers have phased out Neoprene Micro-V belts and begun installing EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) Micro-V belts on new models. Typically EPDM belts do not show obvious signs of wear, contrasting significantly from Neoprene. Cracks and chunk-outs rarely occur with EPDM belts, so it is necessary to evaluate belt wear differently. Like tyres, EPDM belts wear out gradually, steadily losing rubber material.
Gates has developed the brand NEW Belt Wear Gauge to help you assess wear on these newer EPDM belts. It is simple to use, and will allow you to quickly gauge wear on a Micro-V belt-either on the engine or off.
To determine whether a belt is worn or not, insert the gauge in one of the valleys between the ribs. If the belt is good, a portion of the gauge pin will sit higher than the ribs. If the belt is worn, the gauge pin will sink below the ribs. The Belt Wear Gauge can also assist with diagnosing misalignment. By inserting the gauge between all ribs of the belt, it can indicate if one side is worn more than the other, which suggests associated products (tensioners and pulleys), should also be inspected.
