just curious i followed the book everything is on tdc with a new timing chain it will kick over but it will not start like the timing is really out we have done everything leads im pretty sure that they are correct for the 10th time the rotor button is pointing down like the book says it wants to fire but just keeps cranking

is there a special way the head has to be aligined \

the power steering and alternater isent connected yet but i doubt that would have any effect

Might be the timing but I'm no mechanic.

allso i should of add that there was flames shooting out of the manifold but im pretty sure that the timing is heaps far out but it still lines up correct on tdc with the head and rotor button

its my mums car they just bought it of ebay for $200 with a 1 owner with 154,000km with log books and plus the $110 for a new timing chain kit if we cant get going its probably going to go back up for sale for $310 just to get the money back the inside and out is imaculate with only a few dings on the body

Whip out numba 1 plug (closest to the timng chain end)

Wind the engine by hand till the timing mark on the bottom pulley lines up with the TDC mark on the timing cover.

As you get close to the mark have your thumb or finger over the hole in the numba 1 cyl (closest to the timng chain end)

If you feel compression stop at the TDC mark, if not wind it over another turn and bing it to the mark again (you shud feel pressure)

put numba 1 plug back in

Now look at the rotor arm, it shud be pointing straight to numba 1 cyl lead (if the dizzy cap was on)

If it isnt, move your leads so that it does, if its in between 2 leads, remove the nut hold the dizzy in, slide it out till u can move the rotor and turn the rotor a little.

Slide the dizzy back in (the rotor will turn a little) and check again, repeat till the rotor points to a lead post on the dizzy cap if it was clipped on. ( the direction is irrellevant, it may not point down as in yur pic)

Put the cap on and connect the leads as per the firing order and put the nut back on the dizzy but dont tighten it.

Get someone to crank her over while you move rotate the dizy within the area allowed by the nut.

Once it start turn the dizzy till it runs at its best and do the timing with a timing light as usual.

might be 180 degree's out on your crank? or dizzy?

I'd put the alternator on so it has power when it does start and you don't shag your battery.

tryed it all of the above

i know its alot to ask but if anyone in the Sydney area is willing to help out in person for a 6pack or something my parents would be very great full

as stated though this is the first time me and my dad have worked on a magna we are use to the falcons and mazda 626/ford telstar and bombadores lol

Yeah, to me if it is back firing through the manifold the timing is out. is it EFI or Carby, If it's EFI won't this backfiring through the manifold/throttle body stuff something ?

Ask magna buff he might be able to help. Scratch that he qld um sorry about that.

With memory being iffy these days, I have made the mistake of being 180 deg out a few years ago and it wasn't firing at all, a mechanic mate told me just to swap the leads on the dizzy cap 180 deg. for it to be back firing timings out by a whack but not 180, I'll ring him Tuesday when he's at work if no one else has been able to help you. But in principle if you've done a belt, or chain on other cars, it's no different because it's a magna :) I Hope, as I've got to do mine in 30 thou

Also, Ol Fart - dunno if this is better but I use a piece of wooden dowel to feel when the piston is at TDC as a screw driver etc can scatch the bore and I never have any luck with that compression trick - lack of practise for me maybe ?

everything is at top dead center

just did a compression test

96 98 120 150

thats what im getting in the cylinders

so now im starting to think that it is the valves that are bent

off to the wreckers for a cylinder head i spose

magna buff

the timing dot on the cam should be at 3 oclock

and the rotor button brass bit face straight up

and no 1 piston at its top

that is TDC

626_reaper
05-04-2010, 10:58 AM
brass bit on the rotor button is faceing down

the timing dot is on 3 oclock

and this is for a efi 4 cylinder bty

Did the previous timing chain let go ?

626_reaper
05-04-2010, 11:07 AM
yes and we put a new one on

DKG779
05-04-2010, 12:43 PM
If I have read you and magna buff right, your timing is 180 degrees try putting your dizzy cap on the other way around

DKG779
05-04-2010, 12:44 PM
Don't these motors smash valves when chains let go ?

626_reaper
05-04-2010, 01:19 PM
ok we got it started yay

but the engine is bouncing really hard it does sound like the timing is off

magna buff
05-04-2010, 01:23 PM
great you got it started
now you just have to use a timing light to tune it in

(then the dissy was out 180 degrees and on numb 4 cyl)

626_reaper
05-04-2010, 01:31 PM
we use the timing light and no matter what way we go there is nothing it does sound like the valves are gone because the of the low numbers on the compresion

DKG779
05-04-2010, 01:35 PM
because of the compression differences (usually 10% between cyl is acceptable) your highest is 150 meaning 135 shouls be the lowest but your getting 92 that's why it is running rough I'd say

DKG779
05-04-2010, 01:38 PM
what you can do is squirt some oil in to the engine (spark plugs out) turn it over a few times and do a compression test, if the readings do not go up it's your valves - if it does, it's your rings.

magna buff
05-04-2010, 02:20 PM
sounds like you have to take the head off either way

ebay has the head gasket set (VRS) for about $80

626_reaper
07-04-2010, 11:12 AM
yeah its not like its a heap of work but at least we did get it started and atm the timing is way out or its the valves that are stuffed

626_reaper
18-04-2010, 07:24 AM
ok replaced head got it machined now it wont start

this pathetic car is starting to become a nightmare

top and bottom are tdc what about that other chain for the oil pump and balance shafts will that have anything to do with it because because before i put the chain on i made sure that they where lined up to

i dont understand when you go to start it \

it sounded like this with my car ages ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwMXBhgAy54

we have ****ed around with the spark plug leads heaps of times

dizzy cap

1234 clockwise

2431 close's to the timing chain

thats the fireing order

i do that and dont even get a attempt to start

magna buff
18-04-2010, 09:31 AM
1342 is the firing order clockwise

one is at the top of the cap

the brass bit of the rotor has to be facing up at TDC

Put number one cylinder on TDC at the top of its stroke
and the timing mark should be at TDC also

(from the passenger side/timing chains it 1234)

626_reaper
18-04-2010, 10:25 AM
i did it the way you said and nothing its getting spark/fuel

i dont know is there any timing marks on the dizzy that needs to be aligined

magna buff
18-04-2010, 10:47 AM
you had it running once before ok

take off the rocker cover and see if the dot on the cam shaft cog is at 3 oclock

when the rotor and number one cyl is at TDC

http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh59/magnabuff/timing_cog_and_rest_123.jpg
nothing on the dissy just aslong as the rotor is pointing up at TDC

got it going idleing over smooth till the inlet gasket blew because we re used it

thanx you everyone for helping

magna buff
18-04-2010, 11:04 AM
good work

now its just a gasket

626_reaper
18-04-2010, 11:34 AM
its only pissing out with water on the timing chain side and plus it is idleing over abit rough to so that would be the gasket

DKG779
18-04-2010, 02:25 PM
Replace the inlet gasket asap, turn it over with the spark plugs out a few times to ensure any water that may have found it's way into the cylinders is pushed out and as a rule of thumb it isn't the best to reuse a gasket. Glad to hear you have it running again though reaper. Whilst it has been a pain you will soon reap the rewards of a well running 2nd Gen.

626_reaper
18-04-2010, 04:29 PM
well its running fine but still running abit rough after we put the new gasket on i think the dizzy is out by a tooth or 2

allso the 2nd gen magna aint mine its my mum this is my baby
