View Full Version : drivetrain noise
Anyone experineced a whine from drivetrain area between 55 and 65? It's worse when the car has been going for a while. I have a 2006 series one 380, done 28,000km. I had another one before that, it has a similiar noise, but I have driven some from work...oot of 5 Ive driven of those, one had a similiar noise, the others were ok. Anyone else experince this?

Manual or auto?
I'm guessing auto as they outnumber manuals by around 40 to 1.
My manual has a slight drivetrain whine at all revs and all speeds, most noticable on a trailing throttle, especially when the cruise control tries to slow it down going down a hill. It's only faint and at higher speeds on anything other than a trailing or light throttle it's drowned out by tyre and/or exhaust noise. But I finding it mildly annoying and I'd like to get rid of it.
KJ.
it's auto...makes the whining noise in all gears.

No drivetrain noise with mine - 43,000km's. Just a bit of tyre noise around 55-60km/h

If you have experienced it with 2 difference cars you've owned, and others haven't got the noise or notice it, it sounds like maybe its the oil and fluids you are using?...

I've got one - 48000km, as per thread below. Mitsubishi can't fix it.

I am not saying that this is the case with the problem that you are having but a lot of whining noise comes from the cheap rear Hub bearings on these things & you would swear blind that it was coming from the front of the vehicle.
The pre 2001 Hyundai Excels use to get exactly the same wiring noise, but Hyundai put some serious time & effort into investigating the problem & found ( after quite a few gearbox replacements) that the front & rear hub bearings where causing most of the noise in those vehicles.
Why can't Mitsubishi fix this problem if it exists in some cars but not in others? Because they know if it's not the bearings it will be an expensive exercise because so many 380's have the problem.
So it is easier for them to deny it exists or say they can't fix it. But it sounds to me like they just don't give a Dam!
This "intermittent noise problem in only some vehicles scenario" proves that there is an internal problem with some part that is failing which could & should be fixed if they actually lived up to their best warranty in AUS claim.

I have a slight whining noise between certain speeds, and seems more prominent _under_ throttle rather than a _trailing_ throttle.
It virtually disappears with the cruise control set.
I suspect it's due to tyres rather than drive train.
Is there any way to tell either way?

you must have struck an asshole of a dealer, cause I cant speak highly enough of the dealers I use.

The problem we have is there is only one dealer in the area. I'm sure there are good dealers out there but the local Mitsubishi one isn't one of them. Mitsubishi is only a small part of their business so I suspect this is partly to blame for their poor attitude to customer service. One of the problems living in the country - no competition.
Their "best in the country" warranty is only as good as the dealers and in our case, not very good at all. Mind you we didn't have much more luck at the Toyota dealer with our other car (bought new from them). I ended up fixing warranty issues myself as the effort in taking cars back time and time again is sometimes not worth the time and stress.
