View Full Version : tr surging problems
nephew has got a tr wagon 2.6 ltr but it surges pretty bad under load, it also lacks power as well. distributor has been replaced that helped a little. only made it half way up willunga hill in sa which is faily steep i think about a 12deg climb. could it be fuel injectors a cleaner has been put in fuel tank and fuel filter has been changed . plugs plug leads all done and checked by mechanic
any idea's as my brother is pulling his hair out with it atm.

Do a compression test to see if the engine is ok. Sounds like a collapsed catalytic converter or muffler. should fly up willunga hill, or at least keep up with traffic lol

I have the same problem and havent solved it
I was reading the repair manual and the TPS may be at fault
as the ECU relys on the tps to control the butterfly in the throttle body

Could be TPS or air flow meter. Try cleaning the plugs and sockets on both for a starter.
well nephews car has been at garage for a couple of days and car is a little better. i've told my brother it might be the afm and that i have a spare one at home. just wondering iv'e airleaks will cause this problem as well. i think they are a bit reluctant to let me have a fiddle but like i said to him it might work and might not. all codes have been cleared and ecu reset

If there is an air leak between the air flow meter and the throttle body allowing uncalculated air in that can cause loss of power, stalling etc. what colour are the spark plugs ? are they fouling up or is the engine running too lean to have the power to get up the hill ? If it is surging it sounds to me like it is starving of fuel or flooding.
yeh think it would be sucking air through the rocker cover vent that has a hose connecting it to the main air intake. it was fairly loose and i told him about that. plus i think there are some other hoses that might have splits in them.
