View Full Version : AWD ride (eyebrow) height with King SP springs

If anyone with an AWD fitted with King SP springs has measured the eyebrow height (ie centre of wheel to top of arch), I would really like to know the measurements - I've tried searching and found some measurements for the stock suspension, but not for King SPs...
Thanks,
Andy.

Sorry Mate, for the life of me I can't think what SP means at this point in time. I'm having a seniors moment I think.
Anyway I have Kings lows in my TL. with stock rims and tyres the distance from the centre of the wheel to the guard lip is 365mm
Hope this helps.

Are you after front or rear?

I've also seen them referred to as Low SPs - the 30mm drop variation rather than the 45mm of the Lows. While the Lows aren't what I'm looking at, its nonetheless useful to know the measurements for them.
Is that 365mm at the front, the rear or both front & rear?
(I should have been more specific that I'm after the info for both front and rear).
Thanks,
Andy.
aren't SP 10mm, lows 30mm and superlows 45mm ????

Ride height and spring replacement is a tricky thing- I thought my 2004 TL AWD was a bit low in the back end and made some enquiries to King springs and Pedder I found they only made lowering springs based on the "Standard" magna setup- in other words what you got if you bought a FWD es model. According to the Mitsu parts boy the sedan TL in all its varient had 5 different rear spring specs dependent on the individual model varient. For example a standard TL FWD ES with standard 16" rims should have a rear ride height (measured top of wheel arch to rim closest to the road) of 630m while a standard TL AWD with 16" rims has a measure of 590mm. Take into account there is VRX specs in both FWD and AWD as well. Just gets so complicated- good luck.

Yes, I'd realised all that you say... :headbange
In addition there's sample variation (aka production tolerances...) I've seen a reference to there being a + or - 15mm tolerance on the "factory" eyebrow height...
Finding someone with what I'm considering at least allows me to evaluate the potential result (I hope).
BTW, the measurement method you describe (arch top to lower rim lip) is not the most common method I've encountered (only used by Pedders??) probably because the diameter of the rim comes into play. The eyebrow height (arch top to wheel centre) is much more common and doesn't vary with rim diameter (besides having been used by at least one state transport agency).
Thanks,
Andy.

aren't SP 10mm, lows 30mm and superlows 45mm ????
Not as I read the Kings catalogue - they don't make a 10mm drop variant at all... the SPs are 30mm, Lows are 45mm and Super Lows are 60mm (& available for the front only).
Cheers,
Andy.

Correct and AFAIK the factory TJ, TJII & TL VR, VRX, Sport, GTVi and all AWD variants share rhe same 10mm lower than Std and a bit stiffer spring rate. Its probably the same for earlier TH etc Sport models as well

Thanks for that. No worries about the delay; it was a long weekend after all...
Haven't heard from anyone so far with SPs though...

Shoot spud100 a PM. He's got them on his AWD.
I've got them on mine, but I've got LPG in the rear & adjustable strut tops in the front, both of which will give me a different measurement than what they'll be on your car.

Got that.
On holiday at the moment.
I'll measure my car, SP's and Konis during the day.
Has a brim full tank of petrol as well.

Got measurements.
Front - say 374 mm
Rear - full fuel tank - 352 mm
This is with SP's, been on about 20,000 kms ans Konis.

Thanks heaps Gerry!
Your rear measurement is pretty much what I was expecting, but your front measurement is 10-15mm lower than I'd estimated.
Just for the record, at 100000km my TJ2's stock suspension measures 410mm front and 370mm rear on the passenger side (driver's side measurements are 10mm lower) with towbar fitted.
From what I've read, the nominal measurements (for the TJ2's anyway) are 418mm front and 385mm rear.

Andy.

Andy,
Yes but the AWD is heavier.
Even when I first got it with about 20,000 kms on it I noticed that it was lower than a standard FWD TJ.
I estimate that the car at that time was about 20 mm lower than a standard FWD car.
Friend then bought an ordinary AWD, again the Sports was about 10 mm lower then his.
Frankly, for safety this is as low as you can safely go on a Magna.
Reason is that there is not much suspension travel left.
Where I live there is a big dip on the way to work, towards the bottom there is a secondary undulation.
Way too easy to bottom out on this.

I'm all too well aware of the extra weight, and had incorporated that into my estimates.
The 418mm (F) & 385mm (R) heights are, from what I've been able to determine, the nominal eyebrow heights for TJ Magnas factory fitted fitted with 16" or 17" rims (AWD or FWD) plus or minus 15mm. I get the distinct impression that few AWDs are in the plus tolerance range...
I looked at the official eyebrow height list that Transport SA had been using for compliance before their recent change into line with other states, and (from memory) the minimum heights acceptable for the TJ2 AWD were 400mm (F) and 374mm (R). The TL/TW AWD measurements (again, from memory) were listed as 400mm (F) and 370mm (R). Transport SA's required heights for the AWDs are noticeably higher than for any of the FWDs, which varied between years and trim levels of 3rd gens () but were typically around 385mm (F) and 365mm (R).
Just as well I never took mine to SA while that was in force. :ninja:
Based on my car's usage and my indifference to how the car looks height wise, I'm seriously contemplating getting a set of standard height springs (which are geared up for the 10mm higher eyebrow heights of the 15" wheel equipped cars) and relying on the AWD's extra weight to restore mine to something approximating its factory original ride height, as I don't want to risk the loss of ground clearance from the lower springs on some of the roads (tracks more accurately) that I occasionally travel over when fully laden. While better handling from lower springs would be nice, the stiffer aftermarket standard height springs will help a bit anyway.
Again, many thanks for all the input.
Cheers,
Andy.

Hi Folks,
Realise this thread is a lil old, but thought you may like the specs of my TL AWD before and after new shocks and springs (SP'S....front only)
Had all four Shocks/Struts replaced yesterday...with Boge's....and Front springs replaced with SP's...to even up the Front/Rear guard clearance after my new wheels.
BEFORE HEIGHTS: LHF 410MM , RHF 405MM
LHR 380MM , RHR 370MM......( Car had a bit of a lean on )
After new suspension components
LHF 372MM , RHF 372MM
LHR 370MM ,RHR 370MM.......Car now looks nice and even
.....and with the inclusion of Front Camber bolts and a 20mm new Rear Sway Bar....handles and rides like a new one again, so very happy.
Had the work done by Fulcrum at Hillcrest, they took their time with it and set it up lovely, including a really comprehensive wheel alignment.....really impressed to see someone take pride in what they were doing, and it shows with how it drives......will have to get used to it all over again. :-)
Cheers,
Pug.

This is my AWD with King Lows.... there were no bumpstops in the front, and when I got them put in it raised the car, so it's now riding the bump stops
I hae 20's and now have major scraping/rubbing problems - so be prepared to roll the guards etc. if you want to go lower than SP's
Actually I would recommend just staying with SP's full stop, I was given good advice by Alscall but didn't listen and now my wallet is paying for it :)

I ended up going with Lovells standard height heavy duty springs, along with Boge shocks, installed a couple of weeks ago.
Haven't measured the ride height yet; was going to give it another week or two "settling time" before doing so. My impression is that the front is at about the same height and the rear is a bit higher than the stock suspension that came out, which suits me fine.
Ride is a little firmer than stock, but seems well controlled by the shocks. Handling is noticeably improved through reduced body roll in cornering (still on stock 215/60R16s at the moment, with stock rear swaybar).
Pity that some of the rear suspension bushes (I suspect the trailing arm ones) appear to have thrown the towel in... :(

Just wondering- how many km are most people doing before doing the replacement shocks, springs, camber pins, rear bushes etc? Saw on the nolethan product web site a kit- I think it was called a vehicle enhancement kit specified for the AWD rear end- anyone used this yet?

Finally got around to measuring the ride height of this setup - front: 405mm, rear: 375mm. Pretty much identical heights on each side, with car empty but with a nearly full fuel tank.
