hey guy sjus wondering has anyone had a problem where there has been a rattle come from the longer flex pipe that connects to the cat? i rev mine to 2000rpm and let off and it makes a ratle sound i rev to like 5000-6000 and its there but alot louder as with the engine and exhaust, i went to my exhasut guy and he said it could be the seperator in the flex has broken and is flapping around as what was a problem in 3L models its not my Catalytic convertor because i got that replaced only 4 months ago any ideas would be helpful

Hay mate yeah its the exact problem that the exhaust guy said and it does happen to the 3.5l aswell. Cost about 150 i think to fix

i had the same problem the other week, its not your flex pipe, its the baffle in the y -joiner, basically the spot weld has seperated and it gives off a metalic rattle sound, the guy who fixed mine ,cut the y-joiner off and removed the baffle and re-welded it back on, it cost me $250 all up which is a bit steep but meh the sound was doing my head in....

The engine pipe has a "flap" to direct the flow and to prevent gasses pushing back onto the other pipe, there are only spot welded in from the bottome and in time the welds will let go and allow this to flap around
i ahve on occasion been sucessful in drilling the spot welds, locate the plate and weld again from outside, this not having to open up the pipe. Some cut the pipe and remove the flap however I prefer not to do this as it is there for a reason

mine was super noisy, the spots had entirely let go, apart from the first on, which was just hanging, this made 3 wholes about as big as half a 5c coin, i removed my (took some persuasion, and welded up the holes, i notice no difference what so ever in sound or feel of the car. these holes are easier to weld then normal exhaust because the engine pipe i slightly thicker. I did it with a stick welder and it went well.

it wouldnt be the y-join cause i got extactors in 2 weeks ago and i thought that would of gotten ridof the sound but it is still there and its not louder or quieter and the sound is coming from the flex so yea thats my opinion on the problem ill post up the problem when i get it fixed

possibly... what on earth can come lose inside the flex pipe?, i though it was just a hollow braided pipe and if it were to tear internaly i doubt it would make much noise to even notice...
not that i know much about extractors but did they come with the y joiner? or are they bolted up to the existing one?

The braided stuff is just over the outside - within the braid is a pressed 'concertina' section of metal piping. ( I know this from driving country roads where stones eventually destroy the braid on bottom of the flex section - but it still functions perfectly).
Have no idea what would be inside there that rattles, unless its a small piece of loose crap (from the former flap, now removed? Or a flake of rusted pipe etc) - which has migrated to that area and is rattling, maybe even at the front of the cells in the cat?
If you can get car on ramps and use a stethoscope or something to pinpoint where noise is coming from - might be worth undoing a flange to see if you can fix it.

Jump under the car (when it's cold) and give your catalytic conveter a good thump. If it is what I am thinking then you may hear a rattle or you may not. If you have extractors fitted then obviously the Y piece is no going to be there unless you got severely ripped off. You may need to remove your cat converter to check this problem which is quite easy (2 x 19mm nuts and 2 19mm bolts)
Cat converter internals can sometimes work their way loose inside the body and move back and forth without actually degrading/breaking down as they are only held in place by what I can only describe as a stainless steel braided belt around the outside of the honeycomb. I've seen this quite a bit in the 7 years a was an exhaust fitter and it sounds as though this could be the problem, or at least it's a better chance of being this than your flex join.
EDIT: just realised it could also be the heat shielding around the cat, if it is just rip it off as it is not needed.

Got a new cat like 4 months ago so i highly doubt its that but if it is that i guess i can get a new one on warranty the heat shield that was around it was taken off when i got the cat changed so it woont be that, i would get it checked out but i dont have the money right now to get it fixed the only quick fix i have now is putting my windows up haha
