saw tihs in another thread and got me thinking......

I've got fuel consumption issues too - just filled up today - 16.6L/100km. Best I've managed in 9 months is about 13.8L/100km.
I occasionally have a petrol smell emanate from under the car - normally it's been on hot days when the family is in the car with me and I drive more sedately - and I've been wondering about my 02 sensor as well just this week.

beacause its pretty much how my economy sits....... and the petrol smell i started to notice the other day......
when go on the freeway it does drop right down but thats when curuising for long distances with no stopping.....
in the city even without traffic i sit quite high at like 15-16.... i have a 3.5l tj solara.......
is there anyway to test the o2 sensor?????
anything else it could be??????
i just dont have money to spend unless i have too......

You can test them to your hearts content, I even check them with the Mutt but given the nature of the sensor, often you will get a dodgy reading, or all will read ok then and there but when in use is different

I usually recommend them to be changed with teh 100k service although few people do

Ok then, what's an approximate cost for a replacement? My car is sitting at 124,000.

eBay, around $125, $35 second hand. Changed mine after 240,000 km (2nd gen TS V6, I bought a second hand one just to test it out) and the car idles smoother and uses less petrol, although I haven't done a long term fuel consumption. Mine used to choke up and almost stall in slow stop/start traffic, now much better. Need a 22 mm spanner and some fiddling around under the car.

If you are worried about cost, buy the cheaper one and think of the fuel money you will save! lol

sounds like it might be worth a go..... my car has 145000km and i doubt it was changed at 100000km..... and given the fact that on ocasions i have smelt fuel it seems it may very well be the cause of my heightened fuel usage..... will pm when i get some money.......

I'll add it to the 'to-do' list.

EDIT: Just one O2 sensor on the Magnas?

My old TE used to use a lot more fuel than my TJ, and smelled of fuel. It had fractured spot welds on underside of the fuel tank. Couple of lumps of Kneadit fixed that problem and was still on it when I traded it on the TJ.
