Common problem, it'll be the hydraulic lash adjusters in the rockers. How old is the oil and what grade is it?

It's can't be the oil cause it was happening for couple months now and getting louder, and I just changed the oil about 3weeks ago (think it was 5-40)

Well i have found in some of my vehicles if the oil was old or thicker than 15-50 I use to have occasional problems briefly at cold start. An oil change use to help.If it's a ticking noise then it's most likely the lash adjusters. If it's there all the time when hot maybe they'll need replacing, won't be cheap since there's 24 of them as far as I know unless they can be removed and cleaned. They have small holes for the oil to flow into maybe clogged. Maybe they're just worn out. I'm not qualified to comment further really. Had an express van once and got these replaced by Mitsubishi for same problem, but after they did this they discovered a broken valve spring as the noise was still there??

It is common for the Lash Adjusters to block on the pressure valves internally
You can try and run some tappet conditioner in the oil, works for some and not for others
The issue is that the lash adjusters are contained in a rocker arm, there are tiny bleed holes in the tops of the arms and you will find that they get blocked, this will then cause the issue you are having.
Many mechanics just replace the lash adjusters and do nothing else, a few months later same issue.
To replace properly you need to replace the lash adjusters, clean all top end parts and ensure that all the bleed holes are clean and free of gum etc
Also, another issue with TH onwards, Mits decided to save some money and use cheaper lash adjusters which used plastic retainers instead of the crimped metal retainers, these usually crack after time thus when you go to remove them to try and find the offending adjuster you will quite often end up with all these tiny parts in your hand.
Oh and BTW, it is a ROCKER cover not a ROCKET cover lol

i recently had the same problem with the TL i just purchased recently.
Massive rattle on start up. I found that it would go away, if i turned the engine off and restarted. The problem was still there, it just stopped the rattle as it was embarrassing.
This is what i did. It might work for you but so far it has worked for me.
I flushed the engine oil with kerosene ( i don't recommend this as kerosene is very abrasive towards oil and strips all the lubrication qualities from the oil) I did this cos it's a old habit. I ran the engine for about 2 minutes and dumped the sump. After draining the sump i then removed the sump. I wanted to see how much sludge there was (there was a good build up of sludge). Cleaned the sump and resealed the sump and bolted back to the engine.
I used a high detergent oil. I can't remember what it was but it was a oil that was used for cars that run on LPG. I ran that oil for a couple of days (1/2 tank). The hydraulic lash were still noisy in the morning on start up. But on occassion. When i changed the oil i used Liqui Moly Engine flush. I also changed oil filter and added Shell Helix 15w-40.
For the 1st couple of days it was noisy but now it has subsided, I'm keeping an eye on the colour of the oil, when it starts to go dark i'll perform another oil change, this time i'm going to use the Nulon Engine flush, replace the filter and oil with Nulon full synthetic 10w-40 and use the Nulon Lifter Tune Up additive.
So far i've travelled over 1000kms and the oil is a honey brown.
If the lifters are constantly noisy, i feel that there would be some pernament damage within the lash itself. I've priced some last week. Genuwine au$41ea aftermarket au$15ea
I found a place in the US that makes them and they sell them for US$6.50ea. They also do ship them internationally.
i can't remember the name of the place but i would be able to find them... it's very late and i've been out tonight drinking.
hope this info is helpful

A ROCKER cover covers the rockers, and stops oil from escaping.
A ROCKET cover covers a rocket, and stops bird poop from getting on it.
Capish? Comprede amigo?
