My 94 TR has 176,542 km's to it's name and most of it's life has been fairly well looked after. I run Penrite HPR30 engine oil in it and try not to do things on the cheap. How many Km's can I expect to get, I know all driving styles and the current condition will affect this but just an average/ball park figure.
Thankyou !!!

stock youll probably get easy 300,000km with it if it's treated right, always serviced and things are changed when they need to be.

220,000 Km on mine, running well, no smoke or chain rattle. Mine's a manual, autos can give trouble before the engine wears out.

Unless you are unlucky, the engine outlasts the rest of the car. lol

okay, i think i can safely say that 99% of first gens are still running in great mechanical condition. aswell as sigmas, tritons, pajeros and anything else with an astron engine. in reality while not being the best or most high performance engine, they last a bloody long time. theyre very very tough engines and will take a beating before giving up. most issues that people have are due to poor maintenance.

Sigma engines were crap. Used different - older generation - alloys and steels, used to wear out quick compared to the 2.6L magna engines. The alloy heads turned to butter if overheated. I bought several Sigmas (GH, GJ, GK) in earlier days, and all 3 needed engines reconditioned at 160,000 Km. Mind you, they were very cheap, like under $1,000 , not like 10 year old Magnas with 200,000 Km on the clock that still fetch 5 to 7K. Recon costs were $1,500 for rebore, crank grind and head work, $300 to rework an automatic. At the time I figured that for a total cost $3K for a car with a new engine that would be good for 100,000 Km was still a good deal.
I was pleasantly surprised when I bought my first Magna, a carb manual TP wagon with 192,000 Km on it, and discovered the engine DIDN'T need redoing!
I repeat, Astron 1 engines were crap. Don't tell me otherwise.

unfort im going to have to do so. compare thoe to the others of their time. the starfire 4 comes to mind. marked as one of the worst engines ever made in aus. killed by most, hated by all...

seems to be more problems with 2nd gen transmissions than engines from what i've seen?

You can solve their flaw which is overheating by install a gearbox intercooler.

or a manual gearbox. lol
the autos in many FWD cars with big engines and big weight (from what ive seen) tend to die alot quicker than those with little engines and little weights. unsure why...just the way it is i guess...

Perhaps i'm mistaken on my terminology or general knowledge, but if I recall the second gen automatics came with a transmission cooler stock from the factory. Unless we're talking about manuals (in which I have no idea if they did or not) but it tends to be the autos rather than the manuals that have a history for packing up, so I just assumed.

all 2nd gens came with an auto trans cooler. manual did not have the option and also came with a different radiator...

They are large cars but the 2.6 motor is good and reaible. Never has let me down, just need a good mechanic and service regualar. My 2.6l auto has been able to bet falcon. So they are a good motor.

motors do valve stem seals and leak oil due to people not servicing them
gearboxes no one changes in the oil in them!
the VSS's are a design flaw but I dunno....gearbox in the diamante has done 250K and feels rock solid.

I bought a genuine one owner TR wagon (2.6lt auto) with 130,000 on the clock. The thing was immaculate everywhere and the guy was an older dude who looked after it well, when I bought it the valve stem seals were dodgy and blowing smoke on start-up.
Anyway it's got me through a year and a half with no other problems, but now at 145,000 needs em fixed. Overall though been a good car for what I paid.
If I decide to fix the seals I'm hoping it'll get to the km figures you guys are talking about, if not for me for someone else!

its this ^ that ends with things falling apart, leaking and getting damaged. by now you've probably got a mountain of crap on your valve seats from the oil burning in the cylinder. thatll, in time, cause a loss in compression. if something aint good...fix it!

mines running perfectly with 7,500 on the clock.
But it did give way at 250,000. That was after me and another forum member took it into a field and red-lined it till it gave way!

Thanks Guys, I asked cause I owned a few sigma's and the bloody engines wore so damn quickly I was wondering whether to upgrade to the 3L but I will keep it as the 2.6L Auto was fully rebuilt 15,000 km's ago as something had let go (This is just before I bought it) I am going to put an after market tranny cooler on it in line with the cooler in the radiator so it goes through the radator first, then through the cooler back to the tranny.

Sounds like you realise this but AFAIK there's no need to put extra cooling on the automatic transmission fluid on the 2nd gen as you say.. it already has one.

so youre going to put a factory setup over a factory setup? this is exactly what the mitsubishi trans cooler does mate. there's no need to double up. in the 1.5yrs i had my magna as auto i flogged the crap out of it. with over 200,000km on it it hadnt let go and was damn strong when i sold it. just make sure you service it every once in a while, keep track of maintenance and your TR will last you until there's no petrol left in the earth.

Fantastic! Someone agrees with me!
No need to add another cooler as you already have one separate from the radiator, unless you want a BIGGER one to REPLACE the stock unit? If you are concerned about trans fluid temperatures consider installing a temperature sensor and gauge. Over cooling can be just as bad as overheating an auto box.

Sorry it my was my fault for misleading on the intercooler. I had got my fact wrong.

Yeah, I hadn't even checked... I thought stock cooling for the auto fluid was running through the internals of the radiator like a falcon as the Magna manual and Auto's have different radiators
