Ya cant man, the oval filter makes the air passing through it 'tumble' and the MAF uses this to do its calculations, you can take it off but your car will run like **** and eventually will stop running, K&N make an oval replacement thats good for 100,000K's and is washable etc... If your thinking of doing a CAI, theres a thread in the 2nd gen section about making it and it'll be the same for a 1st gen, the guy just took off the piping and made his own, putting the oval filter and MAF down lower to get better airflow, while the filter in 1st gens gets pretty good flow from the headlight im sure theres better ways of doing it but the MAF just cant be deleted unless you can find an aftermarket computer which is compatable with your car and lets you delete the MAF because it can map it itself. sorry kiddo, i think the first question i posted was about CAI and i probably asked it a few times so thats what ive learnt.

I knew there would b a problem...... i will change the stock filter soon to a k&n equivalent and make a cai some how...... near the battery n headlight there is a plastic seal which i took off....... can that hole serve as a cold air intake if i get some plastic piping...... anyone did that? How much are the stock filters anyway????

there about $130 for a K and N replacement one, but i know there a bit of work geting the box open, you have to take a few bolts off n stuff not to hard

Yeah its literally a 5 minute job, as for making new piping do you mean instead of the plastic bit that fits onto the metal filter housing or from the engine to the MAF/Filter?

I've got a first gen K&N sitting right here for my mate. Part number E-2875. Guaranteed for 10 years or 1.6 million k's.

I've put one in my Elante, along with cutting the resonator off the bottom of the plastic inlet piece, and taking the plastic plug out from in front of the battery it has made a noticeable improvement.
