I have just bought a 99 TH Magna and it only came with 1 key & remote. I went to get another one cut at Mr Minit and was told they have to be bought from Mitsubishi dealers at a cost of at least $100!! (apparently there is some sort of receiver thing in the key head) Does anyone know of any ways around this or do I have no choice? I have to get a key either way as the central locking is dicky and locks itself (which could be dangerous if I leave the keys in the car).

I found this on ebay and wondered if this would work?

Cheers.

Some lock smiths can now "copy" the transponder code in your key to another one but by the time they do this and then cut it, will work out about the same cost

Mits will use your vin to cut a key and then will also then need to programme the new and old key back into the BEM or it will not allow the car to start

Your central locking is easy to fix, replace the drivers side door actuator, this usually fixed the locking issue

Your ebay key will nto work as the TH changed the transponder unit and can not be programmed in, the "cut out the chip" is a load of rubbish and will only end up with a mess of a key that may or may not work afterwards

No way around this, went through this with a 97 Lancer. Buy the key from Mitsu, take it to a locksmith to get cut, take the car and keys back to Mitsu to get coded. $135 all up. (Locksmith charges extra because he guarantees to replace the key if he mucks up the cutting)
If it was easy to "get around this" it wouldn't be a very good anti-theft feature, would it? lol
