I recently bought a tn elite wagon, 250k on clock, my problem with it is, it is using excessive amounts of fuel and blowing black smoke. fuel economy is about 3.7k/ltr. any idea as what might be causing to much fuel through.

The black smoke is unburnt fuel
Is it carby or efi?

Could be the o2 sensor is shot.
Could be the computer has had a spaz.
Try diconnnecting the battery for about an hour to reset the computer.
It will drive a little odd at first but it will settle down.
You might wanna PM magnabuff before you do that, he should be able to tell you how to read the computer for error codes to see if there is another problem.

ok black smoke is purely a fuel problem
good you replaced the fuel filter
how is it ideling ?
you may have injector problem so they need to be cleaned or replaced
a fuel pressure regulator may be a problem with its vaccume
,thats on the fuel rail
you may have a crack or its not sealing well
in the breather tubing from the air filter
or the problem is in the air flow meter inside the air filter canister
the air flow filter has four functions any one of which may be faulty
so you try one from a wrecker if you think that is the problem

its kinda annoying me as I had the same problem with my TR 2.6 EFI yet not with my TM GLX carby, and now with the TN Elite EFI. Starting to wonder if this a common problem with the EFI 2.6. Doesnt happen in my KS RADA.

fuel figures like yours
dont happen much
what type and brand of plugs did you fit
would be intrested in the compression of each cylinder
and how the timing is
you may have to clean the throttle body
if you want a diagnostic info I have that
the pin plug in is near the coil

Magna buff, the plugs I fitted yesterday were NGK BP6ES, timing is about 12/360, dont have a compression gauge so unsure of the compression, the throrrle body looks oily, but thought that would have made more blue than black smoke. think the AFM is rooted, as I disconected the wires that plug into the top of the lid and it made no difference. so maybe starving of air and richening up the fuel.
Only had the car for 3 weeks, and for $200 for the Elite Wagon, I'm not complaining, just need to sort this fuel out.
My old 9 Ton ruck returned fuel figures of 25l/100
Also fitted new leads and dizzy cap

if the air flow meter was working and
you unplugged it the motor would stop running
ok for the plugs

Thats what I thought, have to get one from the wreckers tomorrow and see what happens.
The idle was really rough before I changed all the things so far, but now it will idle without resting on the accelerator pedal

I've just noticed a broken vacuum line on the inlet plenum.
goes from there to a switch on the firewall then on to the fuel regulator on the rail.

your a wealth of information. This whole EFI thing is new to me, I'm used to working on old carby cars.
EFI = Headache
Thankyou
still smoking, have to do the AFM tomorrow and see what happens

fit that afm before you leave the wreckers
saves extra trips :io:
I know if my AFM isnt plugged in on my EFI the motor wont start
once I plug it in it starts
if your still blowing black smoke after all that
you may need a dyno/diagnosis to sort out why
diagnostic using the pin out as above picture
you use a volt meter or an LED tester ....short or long flashes
undo the battery terminals after testing the system
this resets the engine computer to default

Cheers magna buff, New AFM installed today.
Put it in, plugged it in.
No smoke, no rough idle.
Hopefully better fuel economy now
Edit : Just taken it for a run
45 Kms
3 Litres
15kms/Ltr.

ok, after running it for a week or so, 350k on 42L
thought 15k/ltr was too good a figure
