View Full Version : Decent exhaust note

Got a TL VRX AWD, and of late the exhaust note seems to have changed a bit. Sounds a bit hollow, rattly, like there is a hole somewhere. I've got HM headers for the record. Had it checked out by 2 exhaust places and no leak could be found.

So in a nutshell looking to change the cat back portion to get a deeper, nicer note.

After recommendations on a system and place to do the work.

Cheers

My advice mate having spent thousands and spending way too many hours at an exhaust shop, HM headers is the best choice, leave all the rest alone other than a Genuine Mitsubishi Sports/vrx muffler.

As i said, have messed around with so many different brands/combonations of mufflers/resinators/hotdogs/cats and nothing sounds as good as the origional setup with a sports muffler.

If you do decide to mess with the mid section which i donm't recomend, then keep all the origional exhaust because i guarantee you will want to put it back in eventually.

Thanks guys for the replies.

Went to another exhaust place on Saturday and they found the leak. The pipe that has the flange and is welded onto the rear VRX muffler has a rather large crack and hole. I've put some of that Permatex exhaust tape on it and I've got to say it has worked. I hope that it lasts for a bit until I work out what to do. The shop is unsure if they can cut the pipe and weld a new piece onto the muffler.

I got a price for the x-force muffler cat back setup and it's $850 in polished stainless. I tried to get a price on just the muffler but as the factory pipe size is 2.25" and the x-force is 2.5" the distributor wouldn't supply a price on the muffler alone. I thought the factory VRX pipe was closer to 2.5" anyway?

If I can get my standard rear VRX muffler repaired I will, but other than that I'll get prices on a Magnaflow muffler.

Thanks guys

Hay mate i would get your origional muffler repaired. Your best bet is to replace the standard muffler with a straight through muffler only cost $80 buck plus another $30 to fit and will sound nice

I don't know what sort of muffler your getting for $80, but I doubt you'd find a bolt on Magna AWD muffler of any sort new for $80, and exhaust shops sure as hell won't weld brackets and make custom piping up to bolt onto the factory rear flange for $30 on a standard muffler.
