Recommendations for an AMP.. budget $1200?

Current system:

Alpine W502 Deck
Orion XTR 6" 100W RMS (peak) in the front doors
Soundstream 6X9" 55T6.9 150W RMS (peak) in the rear
Earthquake 12" Sub 500W RMS (peak) in the boot..

Currently using an Earthquake 2000W/4 Amp (150W RMS X 4)
configured as 2 X fronts, Bridged 2 channels for Sub (nno amp to rears)

But I am not happy with the quality of the AMP..
It is not a clean sound.. loud yes, "Doofy".. definately.. but not clean.. (for the lighter pieces in classical music)

(How do I know it's the amp?.. Cause I borrrowed a $2500 Alpine competition one for a while and it was sweet and clean.. "Doofed" really well.

I prefer to keep the configuration the same..
good quality 4 channel with bridged outputs to the sub.. cause the car is already wired that way.. and with the alpine we proved it works..

Clarity is more important to me than plain volume.. or how good the massage is in the drivers seat from the sub..

recommendations please for a replacement Amp...

ps. One place recommended the PrecisionPower A600/4.. and showed it to me.. looked on the web, only found the older version (looked nothing like the one I was shown..).. does anyone know anything about this amp and is it worth $1200??

I think you have answered your own question. If when you changed amps, and if you changed nothing else, you got better SQ then yes - you are not happy with your current amp.

Lots of factors come into play - not going through all of them. To sum it up, I upgraded from a Jaycar to an Audison entry level SRx amp and it made a huge difference. I didn't think it would, but the Italian quality was worth it.

In your budget I love the recently discontinued Audison LRx3.1k.
It is the perfect 3 channel amp for the money.
Front Channels have:

S/N 103db
Damping 200
2x 160+WRMS
THD 0.08%

Sub channel

S/N 87db
Damping 110
1x 750WRMS ( 4ohm ), 1x 1150WRMS ( 2ohm )
THD 0.5%

I know a place who has an ex-demo one going for $1000. :D

My suggestion would be Audio System's new MOSCONI range. Its pulling in awards left right and centre and definitely something you should look into: http://www.shoppingsecure.com.au/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=244

I've got an Apline PDX running my speakers at the moment, they're a Class FD amp ranging from $800-1000 depending on which model you go for, PDX4.100 or PDX1.150. They usually birth at 20-30rms higher than their rated figures per channel, so they've got a bit of get up and go and they're clear as. I'm happier with my PDX than my old $1600 Rockford.
