View Full Version : Warm air coming from under dash

Hi guys
Not sure if this has ever come up before, but I have a TL AWD which in warmer weather seems to have warm air constantly coming from somewhere under the dash / engine bay. Can't feel the air movement, but it warms your legs and feet.
This can be a bit annoying as I've tried switching vents to not include those lower down, tried using the recirculate button, put the climate contol on the coldest setting (air con off), the fan is off but still feel warmth coming from under the steering wheel. Only solution is to turn on the A/C which I usually don't need as it isn't warm enough outside.
Is this a common thing with this model Magna? Can it be stopped? Might there be a duct off/out of place?
Any feedback appreciated.
Cheers

Hot water flows through the heater core continuously. Obviously one of the flaps isn't closing properly.

Does the problem go away if you turn the AC on to cold for a few seconds and then turn it off?
My KJ seems to "keep" the climate control settings even after its switched off, so if I have it on hot then turn it off then warm air will still come thru (albeit very very slowly) the vents even for weeks afterwards. If I turn it to cold then turn it off then cold air will come thru until I change it again. Kinda handy in a way....set it to cold, turn off and theres a nice cool airflow without using the aircon, or hot without the heater etc....

We haven't used the heater since last winter so I don't think it's caused by warm air continuing to come through after the heater was switched off. We have used the air con recently, and still have this warm air problem. I will try turning on the air con again and see if this makes a difference.
Otherwise it could be a flap not closing as madmax says.
Thanks for your advice guys.

If re-circulation is off, air is actually forced through the intakes and into the cabin - especially at higher speeds.
If it's set to heater, it will still flow through the heater core as someone said.. seems like you have sorta tried that maybe something in the control is broken not sure... if you set it to cold and re-circ ON.. how does it fair?

I think I've tried everything. On cold with recirc on but still warm air coming through. I think something isn't working right. At least it'll be nice in winter :)
Will get the mechanic to check at the next service. Pity the warranty expired 2 weeks ago and Mitsubishi says bad luck....not covered. That's service for you (not).

Bit of a grumble for an issue that was obviously there before your very generous 5 year warranty (the first ever on an Aussie car) ran out. LOL I'm slack too but have learnt to wear the consequences - by the way I have a 09/2004 TL and missed out on 5year warranty by 1 month when it came in with the 10/04 onwards models not that I resent the fact LOL. In realty I didn't have a claimable issue until my power window switch played up a a month ot two ago outsidethe 5 year limit even if I had got one.

Yeah fair enough I suppose but because it's the wife's car and I don't drive it that much you only notice these things when the weather shows them up. The car has been good with only a couple of small warranty claims made (the most recent one being the horn not working). No complaints about the 5 yr warranty, that's one of the reasons I bought the car, but having expired barely a week ago and being told 'they won't want to know about it' I thought wasn't good service. It's the little things like this that make people buy the same brand again.

Xeno,
That is unaceptable behaviour from the dealer. I suggest contacting your State office of Mitsubishi as if the car has been looked after and hasnt had a warranty issue before its not like it has cost them any money.
Still let them know they may organise to get it sent to another dealer to rectify it.
cheers

Thanks Daza, I might do that.
It's not a big problem but I'm not sure exactly what's wrong so hopefully it isn't expensive to fix.....if Mitsubishi don't come to the party.

Yeah.. here's another question.. does the heater and the air conditioner work independently fine? (i.e. it's not failing to switch between the two?)

Yes I tried that last night and they both seem to work fine.
