View Full Version : Tail light wiring problem?

Hey guys,
Just picked up something yesterday that I should have realised earler.
When I have my lights on, both of my tail lights shine normally.
When I apply my brakes, however, the left light turns off. The right light shines properly.
When the lights are off, however... and I press the brake, the left light shines at the level it would if the lights were on but the brakes werent. The right light shines to normal brake light.
Hopefully that makes some sense. I am guessing it has something to do with the wiring of the left light.
If anyone could throw me any help that would be appreciated. And I have replaced the light with two other brands (both the right type), to no avail.
Cheers,
Pickles

In a word, EARTHS. Your left light has a bad earth connection.

Strange...
Check the connections to the globes mate, take out the plate the lights screw into, tug at the connections, make sure they are all tight....strange one
so your saying when parkers are on, they both work. but when you apply your brake's the parker goes out? sounds earth related.

Yeah, when the parkers are on, they both work... but when the brakes are applied it turns off. will go have a look in a minute and report back.

+ 1 for a faulty earth. Crummyhores suffer from the exact same problem. Crook globe can do the same as well.

Just checked it out without cutting anything up...
everything seems intact.
The parker light works fine, but it never goes to full brightness (brake light).
Would earthing do this? if the earthing was faulty wouldnt this cause the parker light to not work aswell?

Nope. Check the main earth i think under the boot scuff plate. Check it is;
Tight
Clean
if not, take bolt out, sand the two surfaces clean and tighten up.

Is the scuff plate the 3x5 inches one that comes out easily?
And by earth bolt you mean the one in the middle? it has 3-4 earthing wires coming off of it.... the black wire from the light runs back up the tube it came from, not sure if it leads to that bolt. Will check it out.

nah the big long thing where your boot latch is, big long plastic thing??? pop it up, should be wires under there.

Popped it up, nothing at all there except two bolts which appear to have now wiring on them ever.
This is a wagon, so im not sure they should be there?
Someone had the same problem recently. Do a search. In the mean time, open up your tail lights from inside and make sure all the wires are properly fitted with exposure or rust etc.

Turns out it was the grey attachment that holds the globe. I tried the right hand one in the left hand one and it worked fine. So I need to get to the wreckers and get myself a new little grey thingy! :)

Have you got a towbar fitted, as the plug wiring mayhave been spliced into the wiring on the LH side and may have damaged a wire... It's also a guaranteed earth if turning your indicator on makes the LH tail light go funny with parkers on
