G'day,
the next part of the never ending money void, refereed to as the magna is the water pump. the other day when i opened the bonnet to inspect the charging system (another problem, another post) i also decided to check fluids. as normal there was no oil, so in went a good few pints of oil but when i opened the radiator i almost died. if there is one thing that this car has never consumed or wrecked it was water, but low and behold there was none evident. immediately it was evident when i replaced the water pump belt i must have disturbed the good old o-ring between the pump and block. so i went down to bursons and bought a new gasket but he didn't have any o-rings so he just gave me one to try. of coarse it was wrong (way to thin) so this morning i went to good old auto-barn which had the 'very specific and rare' o ring that i needed. at the time i was very suspicious because the packaging had thermostat scrubbed out and replaced with 'water pump' not to mention the fact the o-ring was no where near the profile of the original but i was guaranteed it was right. so as soon as i went to put the bar$+ed thing back in i found that the o ring was way to big and could never fit. when i went back i ended up fighting with the bloke until he actually put the o ring on the pump and said 'so i see..hey dave what the hell did you order them for...' so anyway now i have no o-ring and no one seems to have them. i really need a new water pump as the impeller is ready to fall to pieces and all, so i will get one from the wreckers when i get the alternator. any suggestions on where to get the elusive o-ring will be greatly appreciated, but i dont want to have to take a bank loan to buy it either as the frigen car is costing enough as it is.
sorry about the really long post and thanks for your help
regards jay
p.s i have seen the new pumps on eBay but dont have the money nor the time for postage when i can get something reasonable for $15 from the wreckers.

Ive reserved 2 'o-rings' from Mitsubishi, so with the alternator fixed at the moment its only a 65 cent o-ring that stands between the magna and the wide open road. so i am going to pick the whole $1.30 worth of merchandise up tomorrow, right after i take out the bank loan to pay for it and install the water pump tomorrow afternoon. i am wondering weather it is necessary to bleed any air pockets out of the system manually, or weather they are automatically passed through the system. the cause for my concern is due to the head being higher than the radiator, so logically air would get caught in the top of the head and possibly cause problems?
thanks for you help once again. is it possible to donate to the forum with a standard bank card or do you need visa?
regards jay

you have to burp the lower and upper
radiator hoses and until the thermostat opens
with the heater on to expel the air

thanks for the info.
i also went and parked the car 1/2 way up the drive way (very steep hill) and that prompted a few bubbles to come out.
so anyway did a good 40km and the temperature was normal, so i would assume its all good and the heater was working very well. as to the alternator the light extinguishes as soon as the engine starts and the voltmeter climes to about 14, but as high as 15 so its all good (although the dash meter is probably a little off so its more like 14.5).
so thanks allot for all the help. if the issue of alturnators comes up in the future i will try to shed some light to help others.
regards jay

Can anyone tell me how to change the water pump belt on a 1992 TR Magna, Does the water pump have to be removed to replace belt

I take off the cam pully

others undo the bolts of the pump
and hope the pump will move without breaking at the block or leak at the 0 ring
