Hey guys,
Today, on the way home from having my wheels put on my check engine light turned on.
When i got to my girlfriends place, turned off the car, turned it back on drove towards the shops, no problems and then after a minute the light comes back on...
On the way home from the shops same thing, after a minute the check engine light comes on.
This has happened every trip ive done today!
Whats going on?!

Could be as simple as needing a service, but it could be anything. take it to your mechanic and they will diagnose the problem with a scan tool

That's the best solution. Could be a loose AFM plug, could be a loose connection somewhere or a sensor failing.

What the the engine symbol light indicates when it comes on

1. Engine control unit
* 2. Oxygen sensor
3. Air-flow sensor
4. Intake air temperature sensor
5. Throttle position sensor
6. Engine coolant temperature sensor
7. Crank angle sensor
8. Top dead centre sensor
9. Knock sensor
10. Ignition timing adjustment signal
11. Injector
Caution: - The engine warning lamp also comes on when the terminal for ignition timing adjustment is
earthed during ignition timing adjustment.
*Note - The 0' sensor on 4 cylinder models built after February 1992 does not activate the engine
warning lamp

3+4 are the one unit in the AFM.

check that the battery terminals are tight mate.

maybe check this :P

i was having the same thing with my2nd gen. the -ve terminal was worn and loose i didnt even know. it would come off and go back in causing the check-engine light to come up n not turn off until the car was restarted.

Terrible news!
Today when pulling into the driveway, it sounded like a part of my engine had fallen out and was scraping along the ground, it was horrible.
The car then proceeded to spit some oil (or transmission fluid) onto the ground.
When i tried to turn it on again it had trouble and then spurted black smoke out of my new exhaust :(

HELP! whats happening to my baby!

p,s i was planning to do an oil and transmission fluid change within the next 2 weeks.

BR14AN

Get in there with a light, Safe to say if black smoke is coming out your engine is not healthy :)

What color is the fluid? Black = oil, Red= trans fluid, Well look for something possibly hitting the ground if that what it sounded like!

BR14AN

i had a look, nothing hit the ground, i had a quick peek around the engine i couldnt see anything noticeable
and i couldnt quite tell if it was oil or tranny fluid, it was oil like but with a red tinge (which could just be oil in the light)
most likely oil

Update:
Engine is spraying oil out of the timing belt side, spitting out smoke occasionally on start, magna tick getting worse, gear changes are getting more violent.
Taking to my mechanic tomorrow, if the repair costs are too much, might be the end.. :(

If something is terminal then good excuse for a DOHC + Manual conversion. I think TUFFTR still has a DOHC for sale.

soudns like it could possibly be the end..how weird for it to happen all of a sudden like that.

dont worry youll probably get an engine AND gb for like $20 at the nearest wrewckers mate. doesnt NEED to be the complete end...

Probably just threw a rod or cracked a piston. Here's your chance to get into the motor and do some real home mechanics!

You wouldn't be able to keep up! Its an epidemic of TR/TS deaths! Lined up at the wreckers in neat rows! Get in for your parts before they get compacted and sent off to China for recycling! lol

(That reminds me - must go to the wreckers and claim a set of spare door rubbers for my TSs)

great news! just $500 worth of damage -_- some of the seals are spent and need to be replaced, also the transmission is getting flused, front left boot being replaced, getting the srs airbag sorted but still havent figured out what that giant clunk and crushing/scraping noise the engine made was...maybe once the mechanic has the car in the air he will see what it was or maybe my car just accidentally ate a fly.
but for now,
the car will live and it will be lowered by the NSW krispy kreme cruise

I don't get it. It's going to cost you $500 before he looks at the engine damage? WTF

[TUFFTR]
30-04-2010, 11:41 AM
Brian, get another engine and gearbox for $500, get stem seals replaced in motor and t/belt, w/p done and trans flushed, then get that put in there. That engine sounds fooked.

MadMax

Get the engine problem sorted first, no point spending money on anything else before you do that.

I thought it was common knowledge that the 4cyl Magna 2.6's were like in the top 10 of the worst engines in the world since the beginning of time list? LOL!

Not trying to be offensive or negative, because even though I did not get my Magna by choice, rather it was too good to pass up (bought cheap as from relo) I have come to love it. In fact, TR/TS magnas (the only ones I have experience with so far) are a very very good car, and apart from this hot start issue I'm experiencing now, has served me extremely well and as I've said, I've come to love it. It's also known as one of the best acoustically designed cars from the factory for car audio sound quality and this is definately true. It's comfortable as, very nice driving position, drives extremely well, solid and direct feel, definately has a high sense of speed. Doing 100 in a Magna, then jumping in pretty much any falcon/commodore you have to basically go like 160 for it to feel like 100 does in the Magna lol. But yeah love my car, and really as bad a reputation as the 2.6 has, it's pretty much like any other engine, even the old Camira's. We used to have one of those, and in those days it seemed like it was one of the only ones that DIDN'T have these issues everyone used to speak of, but I guess it's all about maintenance and looking after the thing properly as with any car basically. I think the main reason for the reputation is something like, the main majority of people who originally bought these cars, were probably people that either did not know you had to regularly maintain and service a car full stop, lol!

[EDIT] Just realised you have the 3.0L V6, soz, but yeah thought I would mention that little rant once I had started. Hehe.
