View Full Version : Custom front springs - what spring rate?

I have a TJ sedan with a combination of Kings superlow springs fitted to the front and Kings lows in the rear. Whiteline front and rear swaybars.
The issue is lack of control from the front end. I don't know if it's under/over damped or the front springs are too soft.
Going over bumps and dips the front end oscillates up and down a couple of times before it settles. Hit big dips and the front end bottoms out.
I thought the 165K old original dampers where buggered (they where) and fitted new Boge dampers all round.
The ride is much better, but the front end still feels under/over damped and I still bottom out. I don't know if it's under or over damped but it sure isn't right.
I like the way it sits and want to keep the ride hight the same, so I'm looking at getting some custom springs made for the front. Same ride hight as the superlows but stiffer.
Research here indicates Kings Lows are front 185lb, rear 190lb. I have NFI what the superlows are.
Those who track their cars seem to have the front springs approx 20% stiffer than the rear, so I was considering having new front springs made at 230lb.
EDIT: In conclusion the rear of the car feels good, firm, tight and controlled. The front way too soft and uncontrolled. If I have firmer springs made (and what spring rate) will the Boge dampers work with them?
Cheers,
Mitch.

just putting my 2c about the kings fronts
I have Kings lows front and rear, my sister has Superlows in the front of hers... feels like a completely different car. It becomes so sloppy with the superlows!

Go up in the spring rate, but also go up in compression damping on the shocks. You will feel small bumps more but it will lessen the tendency to bottom out. Adjustable struts would be best to experiment with, but are they available for a Magna?
I would talk to someone at Kings. As you already have their springs they should be able to assess the situation. maybe a variable rate would work? Oscillating sounds like the shocks though.
Springs hold it up, shocks hold it down.

+1,
Used to have superlow lovells, changed to lows and it was a completely different car. No more bottoming out and much better rebound rate

any of the NSW / ACT track guys have any input to this?

Got the Superlows on, but they look fulisik lol
I do admit, Superlows and speedhumps aren't the best of friends...

Thanks Guys. I'll give Kings Springs a call tomorrow arvo and seek their recommendation.
I did have Kings Lows in the front previously and the front end felt much more controlled. Unfortunately the nose stuck in the air.
With the Low/Super Low combination the car sits level. I measured it, front and rear wheel arches are within 2mm of each other. I want to keep that.
What I would like is the handling of the Kings Lows with the ride hight of the Super Lows.

With the superlows, you don't have enough travel on the shock which is causing it to become sloppy. Change to the SP's, (30mm drop), or even the Lows,(45mm drop) & you'll feel the difference immediately. The shocks aren't designed to be that low & there are no 'lowered' shocks available for Magna's unless you do coilovers. Good luck getting Kings to make a spring that low with a higher spring rate - I tried, but failed.
King's will tell you that the stiffest & lowest they can make is the SP - 195lb/in roughly, so you'll need a suspension place to measure & order them. That was my experience with Kings anyway. If you do find someone to make/ order them, you'll need to change the shock. Koni's are the only adjustable off-the-shelf product that I know of for a Magna. The yellows will be too soft for a 230lb spring at it's lowest setting, but you have adjustability & the option of having them revalved to suit your new spring, if you don't want to mess around altering settings yourself.
Contact Toperformance (http://www.toperformance.com.au/index2.html) for some advice. There's a guy there, can't remember his name, that worked with Mitsubishi in designing the red Konis for the Ralliart. He has a good idea of the needs of the car & it's optimal springs/ shocks. He'll probably be able to direct you to someone in your area who he'll be happy to work with in getting the complete package right for you.
This is however, if you want to do it 'right'. You could always do it half-assed, get some nice stiff springs in there on the boges, have neither working together & root your shocks within months of getting the springs.
Try Industrial Springs at Port Rd Hindmarsh.

Thanks alscall. That's the info I needed hear. Makes sense and is what I feared.
Money's too tight at the moment to afford custom valved shocks as well as springs.
I think the most economical way to get the handling back is to fit Kings Lows to the front. I was just looking at the car, I might be able to lower the front wheel arch flares with some new brackets to create the "illusion" it's sitting level.

Good idea on the flares...you won't get a great ride from SL and basic shocks. Stiffer springs are great but need matched shocks or you are in for a very bouncy ride. I had king lows made up with the highest rate possible that was still captive in re-valved shocks, around 230-260 from memory, kings should be able to tell you what will work.
If you are running the light RPF1's and brembos (nice setup!)...i'd recommend holding off and saving for a set of reasonable coilovers...better to do things properly first time and you'll save a lot of money! (speaking from my several incarnations of suspension to now having DMS 50MM coilovers)

Who did you speak to there, or do you remember? When I called, they told me they couldn't make anything for me & to go to a suspension joint & have them work it out for me.
