i've had a few people ask so it shall be done. soon as my uni exams are over on friday next week i will start on a very detailed step by step how-to on installing a elite digital dash into a model with an analogue dash. it will include parts needed, wiring diagrams and what pics i can get without pulling mine completely out again.
if u's can think of anything else u want in it post up here and i'll see what i can do.
Tim
That would be great... I've been thinking about putting a digital dash into my SE
If you get the bulk of it done - when i get around to doing it, I will take plenty of pictures and add anything else that i noticed/did when i install it.
Now, to get my hands on a digital dash, some money and some time....
Thanks,
Bill

Hey,
I've found a digital dash... the guy wants $45 for it... is it worth it or should I give him an aussiemagna royal asswhooping???
And are all the digital dashes throughout the 1st gen range the same?

grab it.... the wreckers here wanted $150 when i priced 1.
make sure u get the 3 plugs that go into it.
And their all the models are the same.
Tim
REMEMBER THE PLUGS... or ur up the creek in a barbwire boat with no pants or paddle.

Great! I might do that...
All I need now though is your step-by-step instructions...
Barbed wire on my bare ass  I don't know whether that would hurt  or feel goooood :)

if u think it'd feel good u got more problems then modern science can help  :D
i'll prob start on the write up 2morrow night.
but remember.... u NEED those 3 plugs.... ohh and grab the fuel sender unit 2... u got a wagon too dont u??? if so ur gonna lose the fuel gauge til i can sort something out... u just have to use the trip meter and know ur fuel economy.... i'll explain in the write up.
BTW... any1 have an elite fuel sender unit they want to part with for the furthering of our cause???? none of the wreckers here has 1 and i need it.

Yeah, I've got an auto wagon. Does the fuel sender unit have to come from another station wagon?
About the actual display panel... what is it? By that I mean is it a simple piece of printed plastic with gaps to allow the display through? I like the idea of having a digital dash, but to be honest I think they look way out of date... I was hoping to replicate it using a more modern, sporty look :D .

thats seems the basic idea but i dunno if u could change it.
The deal is... there was no digital sender for the wagons.... so i'm looking at whether the sedan sender will fit and if not i'm gonna attempt to modify them.
grab the sender 2 cuz if i get this working, u'll need the sender 1 way or another, whether its a straight fit or if u need it to chop up.

i've never seen or heard of an elite wagon.... if they exist and do have the digital dash then yes it should fit straight in.

haha there sure are elite wagons lol lol but im not 100% sure if they have the digital dash ill see if i can find out
There's an Elite wagon at the strip yer own wreckers, but I think it has an analogue dash. I'll have a looksie when I'm next there.
Also, they're $59 from Jolly Rodgers, Dandenong. And what 3 plugs?

when u pull the dash out there will be 3 black/brown (cant remember) plug going into it. get these and as much wire on them as possible (ie. cut them off as for down as u can get ur knife)
Tim
PS. i should have a chance to strat the write up 2moro.

So anyway, I might just postpone the digital dash for a while... I'm too f**king lazy right now to muck around with something like that. However, if someone wants to do it for me I'll be more than happy to let them rip into my car!!!
Actually, I was looking at one today in the wreckers, and I have no idea how to get it out???...
How's that write up coming along?
I will have my hands on a digital dash soon :D
Thanks,
Bill

i'm getting held up... start full time at work so things are a bit hectic.
i started modding the fuel sender... but i think the digi 1 i got is faulty (not blaming who eva it was that sent it to me... i can't remember who it was) cuz it registers 4 bars on the guage and doesn't move... at all even when u manually move it. i'll have another look soon. and i'll try get some more done on the write up....
stage 1 is done if u's want that now.... i've done everything up to starting to install, so it has parts required, tools required, how-to remove both digi and analogue dashs, how-to remove old speedo sender and install new1... think thats it, but then u's know what parts u's need for stage 2..
Let me know if u's want it to start and i'll post it or u can wait til its all done.
Tim
Yeah, please do - i wouldn't mind seeing what you have done already so I can prepare the converstion of mine (on the weekend i'm getting a wreck TN/TP magna elite and my dad doesn't want the wreck to stay too long here)
So if you at least give instructions about what i need to pull off and how to take the digital dash out - that'll be appreciated
Thanks for you help,
Bill

surely it would be possible to hook up an analogue fuel gauge based on the original unit, even if it needs to be in a separate housing mounted somewhere else, that should still be fine (better than nothing, if nothing is the only other option)

just found an elite w/ digital dash at the wreckers today, didnt get a price on it but everything looked in good nick. 3 plugs were all there (were still plugged into the car at the time).
Is there anything else i need other than the instrument cluster? Where abouts can this fuel sender be located?
Fuel senders inside the fuel tank, end closest to the front of the car.
So, has there been a write-up?
And regarding the 3 plugs, are you talking about the ribbon cable?

to my understanding you need the fuel sender, the dash (with wires) and the pulse generator (eletronic speedo cable thing)
id love to see what you have on the how to so far?
pete

Uhh no, i think its accessed through the floor in the back.

on wagons fuel sender is located on top of tank and can be accessed from inside back of wagon.
gregorys manual reads.
on station wagon models proceed as follows
move the luggage compartmen carpet to one side
Disengage the left hand side floor panel from the retaining clips and remove the access cover from the vehicle
Remove the screws retaining the fuel pump cover and remove access cover
there you will find the sender unit next to the fuel pump

ok guys, work has been flat out so i have like nothing done (what i did have done my bro wiped when he formatted) i will start again soon as i can but it may be a while. its not hard to do urself if u's wanna try. just match the wire colours and u'll be right. there should end up being a yellow 1 spare, connect it to a 5A fused constant power. And thats about all there is to it.
As for the wagon..... i have the sendser in and reading.... BUT..... the arm on the sender is slightly different so it wont read full and reads empty early. all thats needed is to undo 2 bolts on the digital 1 and change the angle of the main arm on it. if u have a digi and analogue 1 side-by-side u'll see what i mean. so now i just have to put the analogue arm on the digi bracket and she'll be apples. and no the analogue 1 don't work with the digitl dash at all.
those ribbon cables connect the dash internally (thats dash doesn't look like mine, i'm guessing it has no outer casing on it). the 3 plugs u need are part of the wiring loom in the car that connect to the dash. if u pull the dash out of the car u need the plugs that u disconnect from it.
the wagon sender unit is accessed from the boot floor. lift the carpet like ur getting to the spare tyre and to the left hand side there is a hatch held in with 3 screws (or 1 screw in my case :P) the fuel pump and sender are in there. sender is closest to the front of the car.
apart from that there isn't much else i can give u's atm.
good luck, peace out
Tim

id say the left over wire that needs power would be clock/tripmeter memory power?
thanks for taking the time to let us know we will all be raiding wreckers for digi dash's now :bowrofl:

Yeah it is. u dont have to connect it if ur fuel gauge is working but mine wasn't so i was relying on the tripmeter to see how much fuel i had left

ok guys i got the digi dash out cut the wires way down behind the dash where they join the main loom, got the pulse generator, i had problems locating it as the spare magna had no gearbox in it as it was on the ground behind the car when i picked it up as it was ****ed so i tossed it in the boot incase i needed anything off it, all i gotta get now is the sender unit off the tank and im set, now the questions i have are the pulse generator is off an auto can it just screw onto my manual box? they look the same set up as for the other end do they plug into the same place under the bonnet behind the airbox as i didnt bother to remove my cai and airbox to check the loom today, matching wire for wire behund the dash i have a few colors the same does this matter?
cheers pete

The fuel sender arm is on a different angle between sedan and wagon. That's the only real difference, all up, there is 4 different fuel senders. (Sedan digital and analogue, wagon D & A)
The TP has digital climate control, this is shown on the TP dash, in lieu of an Oil Pressure Gauge. (Mine's a Leaded TM retrofit)
I'll do a basic writeup one of these days, as I now have a digital camera.

So how do the digi dashes look compared to the analog ones ?
Are they alot nicer ?

this almost motivates me to do mine i was thinking of using the 2 > 1 wire type joiners so i wouldnt cut the origional plugs off the tp loom, ball park time to convert it?
Pete
12-18 hours. It depends on certain things. The automatics will take longer, as there is more that must be hooked up. The TP has a different loom to the earlier models.
