Hello very noobie question but my standard TS V6 manual gearbox whines a little while it's coasting along. It makes no noises during acceleration/de-acceleration or shifting [up or down] so i'm thinking it needs a little oil my questions are:

A. Where on the gearbox do I check the fluid level cause I have NO idea?

B. Is that the same place I top up the oil in the box?

C. What grade/type etc. of gearbox oil do I use?

any advice would be welcomed thanx!

I don't know much about these cars.. but..

Usually the gearbox will have two plugs.. the drain plug and the fill plug.. to check the level you make sure the oil level is at the same level as the fill hole.

and the Service manual says "Hypoid Gear Oil GL-4 75W-85W" and it reckons you'll need around 2L of it.

Yeah the idea is you fill up to the filler hole (it's on the front of the gearbox on a 3.5L.. sump is further down.. not sure if it's similar for you) and when it starts spewing out, it's full.

Mind that having the car up on a jack, etc will level the liquid back a bit and make you over-fill it slightly.. on the TL it's a bit of a bitch to get stuff in there.. up on a hoist I was able to use the filler on penrite bottles but made a bit of a mess in the process.

Might be easier to ask a friendly mech to whack it on a hoist and have a look.. if the oil hasn't been changed in 40,000+Ks I'd just go for a change anyway.
