View Full Version : Where do i plumb an aftermarket auto trans oil cooler into my tj advance ?

The trans on my TJ Advance wagon has NO replacable transmision oil filter. (God only knows how much gunge is floating around in there). I remember fitting oil coolers to old manual cars, where by there is an adapter that screws under the filter and this adapter has 2 outlets that went to an aftermarket cooler. Of course this was for the engine oil though. Since my model has no filter, this kind of set up is of no use. So where do I plumb the return loop to a cooler on my TJ advance ? I'm thinking after the oil has passed through the radiator ? Is this where I should loop in the cooler ? Which side of the radiator is the IN side (hot oil) and which is the OUT side (slightly cooler oil) going back to the trans ? Please explain it clearly as I'm not realy up to speed with my TJ's transmision. Its the first auto I've ever owned. Thanks in advance,

This has been done lots of times recently. Do a search and you shall find. Basically, plumb it inline after the radiator. I think someone here (GTVi?) also fitted an inline filter as well.

I thought it was meant to be piped in before the radiator. That way it goes through the extra cooler first and then if it gets too cold the radiator will warm it up to the right temperature.

I put a Magnefine in line filter on mine. http://www.magnefine.com/ I got it off ebay for around $40 including postage. No one else really makes anything specific for the job, they seem to have the market cornered.

Thanks for the inline filter link JIMBO. I will most definatley get one of thoes. I cant believe they would make a transmission with NO filter ? I cant work out their reasoning as to why Mitsy did this with these models ? The trans has a casting area on it, that looks like an oil filter should screw to, but its blank ?
Ive been doing a few searches regarding the oil cooler. I'd like to see more photos of the cooler mods though.
Thanks guys

A second transmission cooler goes in series after the radiator cooler. I worked out which way the transmission oil moved by undoing a hose near the radiator cooler (over an oil pan) and having someone else (briefly) turn the engine over.

I had lots of photos here of the job I did but they were nuked (in the forum software upgrade?). Can't see that I can post pics here anymore.

PM and I can email some to you if you like (including pics with markup of which pipe is which).

That's strange - this Ebay advert has a screw on transmission oil filter:

I think you're right. Had one on top of the transmission just under the airbox on my KE Verada. Don't have one visible on my TL Magna..........

my 05/2003 build TJII 4sp auto didn't have an external filter.

from looking at the service manual, it looks like the T/KH had the external filter and the T/KJ didn't.

There looks like a casting on the top of the transmision where a screw on type filter could have gone, but it hasnt been drilled and tapped from the factory. Ive heard that a few TJ's (like mine) didnt have an external replacable trans oil filter on them, which I think is a bit daft. As Jimbo said, an inline one will have to do. Its got to be far better than no filter at all.

There is an internal filter on these trans, but you need the trans out to get to it. my 95 5 speed tippy has an external one (JDM though)

What size filter do you use the 3/8th or the 1/2

Thanks in advance

Does anybody know the transmission pipe size that goes from the Transmission to the radiator for a 4 speed tippy in a TL Magna? Is it 5/16th or 3/8th. I have been told conflicting stories.
