View Full Version : Power window motor
The driver's front window on my TL will go down but not back up & I've traced the problem to the power window motor.
My local dealer quoted $310 for a new motor but said the motor is a new design & isn't compatible with the existing regulator so I'll need to buy a complete assembly instead (for $450).
I've had the motor and regulator apart so I know they are definitely two separate units.
Can someone in-the-know tell me if this is legit or if they're trying to pull one over on me.

I dunno if they are trying to rip you or not, but I can say that unless my warrantee or something was paying for it, I would just go down to the wreckers and pick up a regulator. Would be a hell of a lot cheaper than going to mitsubishi.... I know my whole power window setup (4 Regs, door trims, looms etc), didnt even come to $450....... Just something to think about...
$450 is for combined unit - motor and regulator but its still way too much IMO.
Been to my local wreckers and none of them have window motors or regulators available.
I can live without being able to use the window for a few weeks but won't have any other choice if I can't source a second hand one soon...

Sorry, when I said regulator, I meant motor and regulator (The whole unit)...
Maybe put a WTB thread up? You never know, someone might be able to help you out..
Good idea... will do just that!

Or even try one of our sponsors as you never know, they may be able to help and keep the sponsors going lol
I have regs here, they are all one unit, you can remove the motor from the reg but mits do not generally sell them like that and also when you try and get them back together they rarely work well
If yours is going in one direction but not the other, I hightly doubt it is the motor as all the electrics do is reverse polarity when they switch direction.
Either way, I have ones here, they are TJ but am 99% sure are the same, I charge $85 for the complete unit

I had thought the same but there is power at motor when the switch is activated up and down. Had a very quick glance inside the unit and it seems at least one of the bushes is worn out which might be causing it to jam internally when used in that direction.
Will try to spend some more time poking around this weekend to see if I can fix it.
Thanks for all the suggestions - I've now got some viable replacement options.

You need to check not only for power but also for earth, given that both are needed for the motor to run
There are only two wires going into the motor (supplying for either up or down) - I take this to mean that the motor earths through the housing.
If so, whether powering up or down, both share the same earthing source... meaning if there's power at both wires but the motor only works in one direction its not because of an earth problem???
I'm pretty sure that's right but it wouldn't be the first time I'm wrong on a Friday arvo ;)

Sorry but you take it all wrong
When going up, one wore is positive, one is negative
When going down, they switch, BOTH switch. You can have the motor completely insulated and will still work. The window switch controlls the power and polarity, so in one direction you need power to one wire and earth to the other, in the other direction the one which was negative will be positive, and the postive will now be negatice, and this I am positive off

I recently had this problem appear on a rear window on my TJ. It only occurred after I took the dash out and installed the climate control. At first I thought the climate control was dragging it down (I soldered it into the loom instead of replacing it with a full dash loom). The window would wind down from the drivers side door controls but would not go back up. After belling out the circuit I found an open circuit which turned out to be a loose plug near the J/B under the dash. Works fine now. If you've done any work on your car lately I'd be checking that. The motor is either fine or it's rooted. Bell out the wires and check the contacts on the switches.
If you are looking for a new motor check out lancer_city on ebay. Has cheapish regs on there often enough.
and this I am positive off
Pun intended :)
I'm with you now. I have double-checked though and there is both power and earth at the motor when the switch is operated in both directions so it has to be the motor.
I've sourced another unit and will fit it next week... will let you know how I go.
Thanks a lot for your input guys!
