Hi
I serviced my car a few months back (plugs and gaskets done), but almost 2-3 months after I started smelling oil when driving the car. This has got worse, and when I look carefully inside the bonnet I can see a fair bit of oil being leaked out of the back of the engine (the read bank), in a very hard to reach area.
Does this mean that I need to get the service done again, with new gasket and seals and the works, or is it possible to stop such leaks maybe with some sort of sealant, if the intake etc is taken off the engine (thus being cheaper, esp in terms of costs of materials to replace)?
Thanks for your tips in advance.

i assume your taking to the rear rocker cover, its fairly easy to do, remove intake plenum, and remove rocker cover, put in new seal, and reassemble

Guys if you scared the best thing to do is get a mate over to help you with the job who has done it before, You'll learn how to do something and will probably cost you a slab. This is how I have learnt, years ago I knew nothing, I mean even today I still **** things up all the time but I give them a go, rocker cover gaskets to me are pretty easy and fair enough to someone who hasn't done them before it can be quite daunting, But to do the rear rocker its a 90 minute job MAXIMUM....absolute max....I'd say 1 hour on average.
So yeah....try and get a mate over to lend a hand?

To the OP, feel free to book it in and I can have a look and should be able to tell you where the leak is and also why.
There are a few reasons you can get this problem, is something I fix on a regular basis

buy a second gen, just for these situations? screw up your 3rd gen? drive your 2nd gen!
gaskets are easy, just before you do anything, bring your camera along to document your adventure into the top part of your engine.

Hi all
Thank you for the responses. More or less what I thought. I have messaged you madmagna, would love to hear back. As for Rob, maybe we can both go to madmagna with the parts and see what can be done? Also @ madmagna -- would it be ok for you to also look at what it would take to fix it (and if you can .. maybe quote and fix?? ^_^ )?
Thanks again guys.. The other day had to pull over coz smoke was billowing out of the engine bay, so not driving it much nowadays which is really hampering things! I can see that the back of the engine is covered in oil now.. not being helped by the fact that used pretty thin 30-5w oil in the last service too!

Hi all
The issue was the rocket covers so I replaced those and the leak seems to have stopped. Cost $150 with parts which is not too bad. I did it at A1 repair in Glenroy.
Cheers.

Not bad price, But honestly do what i did years ago and get the workshop manual and read it back to back. It gives you a feel for everything and even if you still dont want to do it yourself, your armed with info, so can avoid been ripped off. every car i get i read the manual front to back, and it is all so strait forward. within a year i went from changing plugs to oing headgaskets, and even replacing bottom/bigend bearings (RB20E-preety easy) .
