View Full Version : Double din replacement!

Hey guys,
I'm looking into fitting some aftermarket audio in my 2005 Es. As you would know, the current headunit takes up the space of two DIN slots. Just wondering if anybody knew where to grab a part to convert this to two separate DIN (One being just an empty slot/tray) or any other workarounds this problem?
Thanks.

I think most car audio retailers should sell what your are after.

get a new double din facia from the dealer for about 50 bucks , or one from the wreckers..
use the existing brackets on your current unit to mount the new one.
the air conditioning controls just unscrew and go onto the new facia.

I know, you know, this, he has a ES not a 6 stacker.
He just needs a pocket or finds a double din Head unit to suit.

So does this mean that if I buy a GT, which has the stereo fully integrated into the fascia, I can swap it over for an ES fascia with the double din slot and not cause any issues with the color multi-function display?
It's the last thing stopping me from buying a 380, as the GT has everything I want but the ability to change the headunit for something decent.

im in the process of finishing off my car PC in my 380 GT..
at this stage, im removing the multi function display and replacing it with the standard clock because with the stock GT stereo removed, you'll get the "COMM ERROR" on the multi function display on any of the audio sections of the screen...other than that it all still works but im not keen on the error message...
if there was a way of removing the error message it would be good , but the only benefit the MCD has is the pretty picture for the climate control and the temperature written...where you can just look at the dials below instead.

Ah, ok.
Thanks for that... Guess I'll just have to try it and see what it looks like!

Oh do please post pictures/specs/troubles/front-end configs/rough prices etc. (ya know, so you can boast about your kick ass setup :P)
Ive been wanting to do this for some time but scraping together the odd $1000 to begin takes more discipline than I have xD .. and than the next gen of mobile phones (Symbian^3, iOS4. Android 2.2 etc) with a tomtom might work out cheaper.. but the geek factor of a CarPC is such a big draw :D.
*yes, off topic. I know but I got excited. It happens. :D*

If you're after a car PC this might be worth a look: http://product.madeinchina.com/2-DIN-Universal-XP-indah-car-pc-car-dvd-car-GPS_11416275.shtml
Never seen one, but the price is almost worth a punt.

I have a 2006 LS which has the 6 stacker. I have just changed the speakers, added an amp and a sub. Everything still works as I havent changed the head unit, BUT i think I might have to :(
The current 6 stacker does not have pre-outs meaning that to add an amp you need to use a line convertor. I had it done the other day unfortunately the speakers become harsh at high volume. (Also the sub is next to useless).
I was looking at Alpines website and it says some of there decks have "Full" compatibility with auxililarly controls, such as the steering wheel controls, but i assume I will still get the "Comm error". Does the LCD still show the climate controls, or is it pretty much useless.
Any suggestions welcome!

Ther's plenty of sound processors out there, a 3sixty from rockford fosgate, Mr Charisme has another type, Audison Bit One IIRC.
You can go after market, steering wheel controls can still work, usually with accesories.
You can get the ES AC Controls to accomodate the new unit, and you'll get an error code, or you could put a GPS in place of your disply panel.
Some audio stores have sound processor set up, and working, on display and you can check them out yourself. If I had the 6 stacker and Multi display, thats the way I would have done it.

Thanks. Yeah I might look into the sound processor. Id prefer to go that way than the drastic measure of pulling out the stock head unit, the comm error would annoy me after awhile!
It's not that big of an annoyance, really.
