well the time has come for me to take the plunge and spend some money
on getting 2 12"subs for my car instead of my crappy 1 explode, which is a piece of sh*t..the sony just isn't able to cope with the sounds i want....i've had my amp tuned and everything, but i think the type of sub is mae for a small enclosure..
any suggestion on what to get...at the moment i've got a 800watt avalanche amp, which i have run my sony 12" and a alpine type s 12" off too.. so the amp is fine i think..
so what do u guys reccommend on getting??
i'll make up a poll but some comments would be good also!!!
thanks

i voted for your type s just cos it looks better with everything looking even - and two subs the same looks better than two different - but otherwise i am a kicker man - big bad boom!!

Get Type R if you can if not Type S, that would be my choice.

Are you after SQ bass or SPL bass??

Alpine have a good mix of SQ and SPL, MTX and RF are more SPL.

A lot of people dont't rate them but me and a few people I know swear about Cadence subs. American made, fairly new in Australia and really well priced.

They outperform the Alpine, Kicker and JBL subs that I've had in my cars.

Cadence is one of the better ones....unheard of in australia but they are of awesome clarity.

i was going to purchase someof those!

Pretty much the only place that sells Cadence stuff is JB Hi Fi, and they are selling it for practically nothing to try and get people aware of the brand.

Or so a bloke I know who works at JB tells me...............

JL!! JL!!

JL is crawling up the market in price, but believe me, 1 12" JL will pounch a couple of Type S's. But if its money ur worried about, then go with alpine or pioneer. See if you can get ur hands on sum Poineer Bullet subs, theyre ***kin sweet as. And alpine, i would go past Type R's. Any quesions u have, msg/email me

Roger Had Type R's.

I pulled appart my boot enclosure on monday and the wiring is a bit dodgey for the left sub so i think that will fix it. I never use my subs anymore so i need to retune them etc. They sounded like shit on sunday. oh well...

i cant go past pioneer...they r a mad brand...and those bullets r sweet! I had 2 12" and they rocked!

ive also had fusion gear...and 1 12" in my wagon and it went pretty hard for the power i was puttin threw...

Like ice says...sony dont make the best stuff. Pricey and ugly. Other brands will be cheaper and play better then sonys...

Tiphareth
05-06-2003, 10:09 AM
yes i agree, if you want a fair price, but good power in any area, Alpine is the best way to go, although i have never had, or seen, many problems with Pioneer. but if your after speakers or subs in pioneer, i wouldnt buy anythin but the Bullet subs and speakers, they pump quite nicely. But ALPINE is the bomb, no a pro setup, but not all of us can afford pro shit like MB Quart n stuff. ill post a list soon of all the gear i'd recommend for a sweet setup, prices too maybe, if i can get my hand on sum.

Alpine make some of the best power outing H/U around - they can put out 4V where as other H/U only put out at about 1-2V!!

If you are running apine amps - you will need a 4V pre-out to get the most out of them!!

Me running a;

pioneer 7350 H/U

reference series mb quartz splits up front

15" modified crossfire BMF Series Subwoofer
rated at 1200w rms contnous dual 4ohm coils and 1.8inch excursion
Custom tuned ported box at 47hz which takes up the entire boot
in an XL

1001 bd Rockfordfosgate amp which puts out 1092w rms at 2ohms with 73% efficiency

and looking at either an eclispe or audison amp for the mb Quartz

To me pioneer and alphine kenwood and sony are nothing special..... maybe the top of the range alphine the pro competition series gear the ones where u spending like $1000 for a sub may sound ok but not the type s or r... they sound hell dodgy and overrated.

but i think i'd prefer to spen an extra 100 or 200 and get something like Eclispe, Lanzar, Jl, Crossfire, earthquake for subs and for speakers soemthing like mb quartz, diamond, cdt, focal, eclispe.

AussieMagna

PIONEER! I sware by these buggers, top decks. But you have to spend a fortune to get 5V output.

SiNERGY
05-06-2003, 03:55 PM
It's good to have a higher RCA output but make sure your amps can handle it!

Most amps can't handle anything over 4v, you can fry your amp and you'll void the warranty.

The eclipse 16v Balanced output unit is very nice, but as 92'TR-wagon said, he can't really afford more than Type S price range.

SPL - is sound pressure level, so how loud the subs get. But a lot of SPL subs aren't clear and precise, thats where SQ(sound quality) subs come in to play, more like Eclipse and Type R etc.

If i were you go the JL or Alpine, both very nice sounding subs and if you give them enough power will rattle your car apart.

Sorry didn't realise - most yankee amps have variable input voltages - I know that the new SX series of kicker amp can handle up to 16V pre-out - that is insane!!

There is nothing wrong with sony/pioneer/panasonic etc...

As with everything there are different classes, you'll notice that the three brands above have very "pretty" looking top end head units. Thats because the main people who buy them base their decission on key features, and looks.

However if you look at really top end stuff (eg Eclipse, Nakamichi) you'll notice they are much simpler looking but offer much better sound quality and more sound realated features rather than an indy car going round and round.

well i'm probably look at maybe spending 5 hundred.
all up... so maybe one sub might be the go, but maybe go the JL of sumthing.... looking for sounds that will vibrate the seats from the rear of the wagon up to the front of the car. The explode does but it's bass isn't as low or loud as some of my mates with there Type S's. So i'm looking for a sub/s that will really pump hard and send my hair dancing when i drive.. my mate has 2 Type S's and u can hear him from bout 200m away clear as a whistle, wel the bass anyway..
so i wana be able to be heard coming!!!!
but the main reason is the in car sound...if i can be heard coming a mile away thats great,, but a good in car sound qualitiy is what i want!! :o

hehe.. i was reading that the NT coppers are cracking down on os 'HOONS'

hehe.. i already got a stern warning after running 2 yellow's and speeding (110 in 60) in down town alice, went over this 'rise' in the road which i then hit the deck and scraped my 'cool' towbar and caused some nice sparky action... 8)

i didnt get booked cos he didnt have a radar and i said i was only doin 70.. and SHE let me off.. damn she would of been a nice ride too ;)

oh yer.. they were in the unmarked XR8  bastards!

but at least i got away 8) and talked to her for like 10 mins... 8) she was a young one too  ;)

that kicker SX is that the latest models top of the range stuff? the one with the 18" solobarric that can handle something like 5000w rms and weighs something like 50kg?

but y do people go out and spend $1100-1500 on a sony, kenwood, panasonic, jvc H/U when they can buy an eclispe or a/d/s or anything like that H/U for roughly the same price that is going to be by far superior in sound reproduction due to the higher quality of components found inside.

anywhoo..... anyone live in perth and going to the rollaboys SPL sound off next sunday at morley car audio? or morley hifi whatever it is called?

anyone ever done a SPL test be4 interested in hearing what everyone averages roughly..... iv'e never been to one so dont no whta to expect and the format that takes place.

Hey do u live in perth? hows this for an idea?
go to jaycar.. and buy 2 15" subs they retail for like $100 u wont win any SQ comps with them but they get pretty loud and they need bugger all power to drive something like 300w rms continous. and that leaves u with $300 in the pocket... throw another $50 in and u can buy their 2 channel amp which is rated at 2x150w rms bridged into 4 ohms gives about 485w rms x 1 or 2ohm x2 is something like 250w rms or for $400 u can get a 100x4 rms amp which can be bridged 2x300w rms at 4ohms... my mates got the 4 channel amp and 2 of the subs... they sound nice for what he paid for them and they get pretty dam loud for $200. They got a huge rubber surround and they do move when given poiwer..... we hooked them up to my rockford gave them 500w rms each and they took it like a b*tch sure do move. not oonly will u have the wow factor too when u pop the boot u will be heaps louder then mates type 's . only bad thing about it is they got response written on the dustcap but u can scrape it off and paint over it =] and no one will ever no=]
that would be the way i'd go on a $500 budget
