View Full Version : Slimline subs in rear seat cavity

So, due to my large LPG tank in the boot of my TJ sedan, I can't really get a sub behind the rear seats, so I was wondering, how possible/difficult it would be to put two slimline subs in rear seats, under where the passengers actually sit?
It looks like there could be room, provided I cut into the seat foam a little, but I guess then I'd have to create an enclosure, and the seats could get uncomfortable.
Has anyone done this, or seen it done?

I can see a few issues with this..
1. Not enough air for the subs to actually move...
2. If they are under the seats, how do you stop ample derrière from breaking the cones ?
3. Output would be majorly reduced..

Have you thought of mounting the sub in the wheel well?
I've done it to mine and still retain the spare.

1. Ah, hadn't thought of that.
2. I figured I'd have to create some sort of enclosure to prevent such rear ends from ruining my rear subs.
3. True, I thought the seats would potentially absorb half the energy, thus having two, but even then, it likely wouldn't produce the output I want... :(
It appears there'll be some physics-based issues with this plan.
I could try the wheel well, but I'm worried something will happen to it there, and it is quite a ways back in the car... :\

I've just recently returned from 1600km trip with a full boot, and same again driving to and from Perth and the sub and amps survived the trip.
Mine has a protective mesh grill that came with the sub. To see what it looks like check mine. Link here (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1243191&page=5#post1243191)

Hehe, I did see that while trawling. It is pretty cool.
I kinda had my heart set on the in-seat idea, so I guess I'm going to have to plan for something different. Cheers though!
Where are you amps? Underseat subs under the front seats would make more sense to me.

thought about putting them where the pasengers backs go? more room to cut into there as its all plastic/foam.

you could always mount the amps under the seats? thats where i got my 4ch, and my mono is bolted to the back of the sub box.
i just changed from a single cab ute, and have tried 2 many 12in flat pannel ute subs...from cheap audioline ones, crappy pioneer ones, to top line kicker ones....
the result?
one old 10 inch jbl that i got from ebay (noram sub, not flat pannel) smashed all of them..... oh and they were all sets of 2 ute subs.
my advice DO NOT BUY THEM
all depends on how much boot space you want.

So, no good? I don't need a heap of bass, as the speakers I have already just about do what I need, I was just looking for a little more, so the slim subs seemed like an ok choice. Mind you, I have yet to price them.. :\
Was planning to put a two channel amp under one of the front seats and run the two subs off that.

Hey mate,
Nothing wrong with the better end of "slim" woofers. These include JL W1, ID, Hertz ES, and Polk MM.
They are not advertised as "slim" but around around 120-130mm depth for a 12inch, they are not bulky.
This will mean you should be able to build a slim line box to fit anywhere in the boot. :D

You could do an alternative and use a Slim line sub on the side of the boot near the wheel well.
Mount the amp under the front seat and just run the Sub speaker cables into the boot..

yeh if you go top end space saver subs they pump....but they cost an arm and a leg compared to regular subs.
should put up a pic of how much room u have left with the tank in there...
oh and if you kicked it off to the side like the pic above, you could prob fit a full size 12 in there :P
