View Full Version : Spring/Shock Setup for Comfort and Decent Ride

Hey all,

Eventually I will be upgrading my springs, I would like to go for the height of King Lows or equivalent.

My questions is about ride quality.

On my KS I had Pedders springs up that front, standard compressed on the back (God knows how old either or them were) and KYB shocks front and back.

I was very unhappy with the general ride quality, even on 17" wheels it felt particularly HARD and JIGGLY. Small bumps or road imperfections would shake the interior of the car. Before you ask, YES, it had new bumpstops in there - it was bad even when they were brand new.

I have been in and driven a few members cars on the forum that feel great, Cybermonkeys, ih8hsv's and Apricot Rocket's stand out as handling great round corners as well as being nice and comfortable over bumps/speedhumps/whatever. Cybermonkey has the KYB/King Low setup, ih8hsv has KYB/Super Lows, Apricot has Konis.

I was majorly pissed off with my KYB's, especially the fact that a new set died within 12 months, and the new set that pedders put in to replace them felt sad 9 months after that. Needless to say, I have a bit of a prejudice against KYB shocks, but should I instead be angry at the pedders springs I had up front on the KS? Is the KS suspension design to blame?

Your thoughts are appreciated - I am interested in others experience finding a setup to reduce a bit of body roll (well anything better than the Verada springs in there now) that will be comfortable enough for daily cruising. I now have a swaybar (on hard setting) and strut brace fitted - but would like to clear up the body roll issue, and let the 20's fill the guards a bit better.

Thanks in advance!

Pete I have nothing but praise for the kyb's, they offer great ride and comfort but tough enough to like being chucked around a bit. Perhaps one of thr awd boys can comment in their setup?

If your after looks and comfort, my King lows with the Boge shocks work well, they're stiff enough to reduce body roll over the stock Verada suspension greatly, but they're still nice and cruisy when you just want to relax. Also for EOI atm :P

Since you had issues with KYBs on a different car with different springs, I wouldn't let your bad experiences with KYBs get in the way. Considering how many members run them, there's minimal complaints about them on the forums.

Like Lugo said tho, Boge are another worthy option to consider. Or you could just go all-out on Konis :)

Hit up Shawn @ Phillcom for a quote on Boge shocks. I paid $540 for mine a couple of months ago from him.

For springs perhaps Lovells Lows, they have a softer spring rate than Kings. I have no personal experience with them but haven't read anything bad either.
Next mod would be an uprated front swaybar to match the rear.

Pete,
You have a few choices, if money is not too much an issue, go the Koni reds with Kings

If you want to save a little, go the bogue with Kings

Either way, I can look after you for all of the options, KYB, Bogue, King and Koni as well

lol ...it's Boge, Mal. lol

Peter, for the AWD, I'd be choosing the KYB's over the Boge's anyday as they're slightly firmer, which you need with the extra weight.

But if you're going to shell out, go the yellow Koni's. They're more appropriately valved to suit the lows than the reds - (The softest setting on the yellows is equal to the firmest on the reds, according to Koni.)

Thanks guys... I'm meant to be booking in a holiday for the missus and myself before I spend any more money on the car so the budget is $0 at the moment.

Will the normal 3rd gen springs work with the AWD?

Mal thanks for the offer, I will keep it in mind. I may upgrade to something different in the future if I am unhappy with KYB's.

As in, stock springs or aftermarket? They'll all fit. Shocks & springs are the same, just the rating of the stock springs differed slightly between models.

Thanks for the clarification Al, yeah I meant 'normal' 3rd gen as in 'non-AWD' 3rd gen.

So many other things are different.... fuel tank, carpet, muffler etc. etc.
