yo dawgs, :hmm:

I'm new here and I've got an '89 TP Magna sitting around not doing much, which I'd like to take care of or pass on to someone else who will. It's generally fine but has a couple of small issues I'd like some advice on:

1) It's got that non-working tacho thing, which I read somewhere is a relatively common feature on this generation. I asked on another forum and I think someone said it was a "pulse generator" (or something like that) that needed replacing. Where can I find this bit (on the car) and where's a good place to get a new one?

2) Recently it's started blowing a little cloud of blue smoke at startup, which I understand is caused by the valve stem seals slowly letting oil into the cylinders. Can I replace these easily myself? Again, where's a good place to buy new ones? How long would it take a mechanic to do it for me? (just in case I come over all soft).

3) I was thinking of selling this car (on behalf of my mum) as it's not being used much any more. I know I'm not allowed to sell things on here yet, but could I get a general valuation on it? It's a metallic blue GLX (carburetted, manual steering) wagon, manual gearbox, with about 216k on the clock. It's in generally excellent condition as it's been garaged and looked after and not run into trees. What else... good tyres, new front shocks, new water pump, new battery.

Basically there's nothing wrong with it, but it is a Magna of a Certain Age so it doesn't tend to attract a lot of interest. Is it unrealistic to expect a crazy Magna enthusiast to come along and give me $2500 for it?

Thanks in advance guys :)

I'm not too sure about down in tassy but on the mainland if you got $1000 for it you would be doing well I think.

That's with rego and roady

to be honest, I would only fix it if a friend / family Member wanted it sort of thing. Selling to someone else would be difficult.

Saying that, if you wanted to fix it, for sentimental reasons the things you havesaid, if you can do yourself shouldn't cost much.

yes $2500 is unrealistic. i paid $2300 in 2006 from a dealer for one in generally excellent condition. personally i wouldnt think you would get more than $1000 now.

TP, 192,000 km, bought from dealer 8 years ago, paid $1,500. No smoke. Metallic blue, manual, working aircon, heater, but GLX carb model. Adelaide. Just for comparison. Passed on to family member who pretty much destroyed it and couldn't be stuffed fixing it. My advice: Fix it, drive it for next 5 years. Cheap motoring.

its a shame the magna hasn't held its value like the falcons or commodore of the time. depreciation is a bitch, although gives allot of people decent cars cheep so its kinds 2 sided

You would be looking for someone crazy not an enthusiast I bought a TP manual with 131,000km for $350
about 7 months ago. It was working fine and cost $200 to RWC. Not blowing any smoke. I have seen 2 in Queensland
selling for around the $300 mark. Its not usually a good idea to do the seals on their own as the rings on the engine
can go shortly after especially with the mileage it has done.
