from what ive read the stock piping is quite good on the magna and usually you just have to change the exhuast to a high flow one usually luker are good but that is for the sixea im not sure about the 4's.

This topic has been covered a shag load of times. Although it was more reffering to the 6's not the 4's. What type of sound are you after? Are you doing it more for the flow not so much the sound? A lukey muffler which alot of people on here have fitted which is a true straight through design and very quiet is the lukey LR 2779. I've got one fitted on my car, very quiet at idle and low revs, although once you get up in the revs you can tell its not a stock muffler, I also have a fairly deep note, although thats more due to the pacemakers I have fitted. Theres plenty of options out there but its hard to determine how its going to sound being a 4 banger.

On the 2.4 3rd gens, Im not a 100% sure but I think the piping was like 2 inch mandrel bent stock. I could be wrong but Im pretty sure its smaller then the 6 cylinder exhaust piping of 2.25 inch mandrel bent. Either way though, no real point in replacing piping especially as you said your on a budget, as you wont see any justifiable gains from replacing stock piping.

Also, I remember reading an article a while ago that stated that the 2.4 4 bangers really benfited from a good set of extractors, as well as the added bonus of a deeper exhaust note.

Cheers.

'Extractors' is an adopted name for performance headers. All cars have headers.

Poko,
i have a te 2.4L 1996

the 2.4 Comes with extractors, But not race tuned ones.
I have installed a Verada 3.5L sports Exaust (the same as the lukey) made by walker.
its probably a little quieter than the lukey not sure. it cost me 220$ genuin from mitsubishi and i cut and welded it on to the 2.4 original Exaust system.
it sounds verry nice its not to loud just nice. really good on a quiet night. :D
where are you living? I really want to compare my car with a stock 2.4 since i have done various mods.
:) how many KM's has yours done? is yours an altera?

Race tuned extractors are around 600+ i belive i think they are 800 im not sure. and you would fit them your self :D well ok im not sure on fitting as i do all the work on my car :D

Reduced whait.

intake manifold heater thingy offf (in summer).
replace intake manifold gasket with less heat conducktive one.
opend up the intake plastic.

OK mate..
GO out there and get a muffler..
Slap it on and off you go.

NO need to get extractors or any thing els mate..
CHeap mufflers are hotdogs
or cannons. but they need to be fitted / welded
order a lukey that bults on would be my bet. mate. <-----
Muffler would have been the best impruvement i have gotten out of my car other than ignition timing. that was huge difference.

the stock one was a brick...(2.4 auto :S) it goes much better now

No, you can leave the extractors how they are.

I have just got my car back from the shop with a brand new Turbosmart exhaust muffler. Lets just say it's a lot louder than what i expected and it sounds awesome. I would recommend one to anyone any day of the week. As for the cat back piping, my 2.4Ltr Magna has 2.5inch cat back, so my new muffler fitted fine with the same size inlet.

I was looking at extractors too, but i would have to get a custom set made up, about $600 they quoted me. Little price for me, as i am also a student at the moment. Plus i don't think they would make much of a difference on the 2.4L engine anyways.
