View Full Version : 155kw engine?
Hay all
I own a TH sports engines got 260km havent driven it in a week i started it up this morning a fair bit of blue smoke came from the exhaust. My engine is the 147kw 3.5l. Im wanting to get a 155kw 316nm engine from the wreckers low km. Wondering how much these are at wreckers now? There is definatly a noticeable difference between these 2 engines not alot but noticeable.
Thanks Kurt

if you are talking boutthe vrx engine only difference is the exhaust... so engine would be silly to pay extra for...

hmm 127 atw sounds good - im happy :) thanks Kurt made my nite :)
arent the 380s onli 175kw anyway?
The first batch of TJ's got the 150kW 74, and the rest got the 155 thanks to a different tune. The 147-150 difference was down to cams and was brought it with the release of the TJ.

by first batch you mean the "series 1"?
If you cant answer the original question, then dont respond!, guessing or rumours wont help anyone!

Correct. Kurt, you'll only get half of the upgrade if you get the motor, due to the CAMs. You'll need the better ECU flash that came with the TJ if you want the full 155kw package. The VRX's had the 163kw due to the muffler upgrade as well as the previous.

I believe that this is correct.

Speak to Madmagna, he can reflash the stock ecu with a different standard tune, I know there are differences between models with the ECU, but some models had them in common. Hopefully it's not too difficult to load the TJ SII profile for e.g. onto your TH ecu. That's another option if you can't source the new ECU (and don't forget to grab the BEM as well if you go down this route).

3.5 V6 Before TJ series 147Kw
3.5 V6 TJ ser 1 -150kw
3.5 V6 TJ Ser II - 155kw - cams and re-tuned TJ II VRX 163kw due to a free flowing exhaust and a re-tune of the ecu
I asked My Mitsubishi dealer if i changed my Executive muffler to the VRX will i have 163kw and he said no i need the Exhaust and he can whip the computer in my executive to run the map from the VRX But he stated 8kw for $450 not really worth spending my money. But you should be able to buy a TJ II engine and VRX ECU for around $1200. Madmagna Can unlock and im sure MadMagna has two TJ II engines and ECUs :)
Not exactly, my tj s1 has the 155 motor. It appears the last of the s1 models particularly the limited editions got the 155 tune

TJ got the revised cams to take 147 to 150kw.
TJ made Aug 2001 and later got the retuned ECU upping the 150kw to 155kw.
All TJ engines and cams are the same (except ralliart), just the tunes and exhausts that vary for VRX etc.
So to answer the OP, any TJ+ engine (again, except ralliart) will yield the same result, then it comes down to what you do ECU wise.

Oh ok thanks that helpfull imformation. Wats the BEM?

BEM stands for Body Electric Module.
This is a seperate unit that controls the locking, lighting, key and security features.
Your keys/remotes are programmed to the BEM and the BEM is linked to the ECU for the immobiliser function.
There are different types of BEMs. Veradas use a "Hi Series" BEM with more features compared to the "Mid Series" you will find in Magnas.

ECU and the Body Control Module, can't remember what the E stands for, are a matched pair.
The BEM controls the security on the car, mates electronically with the key transponder and the remote control as well.
You can get this function removed from the ECU by SKR in Adelaide when he does a retune flash.
Otherwise get both modules from a later car.
The BEM is behind the RH lower fascia, roughly in front of your RH knee.

If you have the easier to program ECU Steve or Mal can disable the security so you can use ant BEM. Just remember that the TJ ECU,s are easier to program than the TH a/c the TH requiring everything to be converted to Hexadecimal as per this post:
