Hey all. I have a 3.5L and 5 sp manual box that i need seperated. It is out of a 2002 Magna Commonwealth Games Limited Edition.
I have hoisted them out of the car and have them sitting on the floor of my garage. However in getting it out of the engine bay i seperated the LH drive shaft at the big green bit. There is a piece still in the gearbox.
I undid all the bolts holding the transmission to the engine and it seperated about 1cm. it seems loose, but still held by something, and won't budge any further.
Does the LH drive shaft need to be completely removed, and if so will prying with a crowbar get it out?
And is there something else i am missing that is still holding the gearbox to the engine?
Any help on this would be a great help.
Cheers, Geerant

Have you disconnected the release bearing?

I read about that in the workshop manual but didnt really understand what they were talking about. Sticking screwdrivers in and such. My guess it could be holding it together. Any tips on how disconnect this release bearing?

You need to insert a screwdriver into the inspection holes on the gearbox and flick the release bearing off. Push the engine and gearbox together first. Don't force it, you will damage the pressure plate. The driveshaft bit in the gearbox can stay as it is.

Hmm no amount of prying seems to be getting anything to happen. Is there a trick to getting this release bearing off? Do i need a swrew driver in both inspection holes at once or can it be done with only one in the top hole..?

i know how you feel i had 4 hour marathon trying to get mine off as i was only wanting the box i just took the whole flywheel off then got it off may not be a good idea if you want to keep the motor though no real easy way to explain just a pain in the ass you will get it in the end.
the release bearing on mine would not move like it was sized i only wanted the box and had a new clutch kit so the bearing didnt bother me if it got damaged
so a search a few threads about this

If you remove the flex plate from the flywheel throw it out as it is a balanced unit and shold never be separated as per the Manual states
Look up from the bottom hole, you will see the pressure plate, a wave spring, a flat plate then the release bearing. You need to put a screw driver inbetween the flat plate and the release bearing, push the fork all the way to the LHS (pass side) and then twist, the fork will then spring all the way to the RHS of the bell housing

I think i have tried every possible way to lever the bearing off. I have broken some parts in the process aswell :P I only want to keep the gearbox. Im binning the engine and probably the clutch aswell. Is there any other way to get this damn gearbox off this engine?

ok, you need to put the bellhousing back onto the motor so it is flush, and put a couple bolts in to hold it there.
take the a couple of flat head screw drivers and one from the top and one from the bottom inspection holes, and flatten the little plate against the pressure plate. in doing so you will compress the wave spring and now that it is flat against the press plates, hold the screw drivers there and pull the clutch fork towards the motor, or in other words disengage the clutch. THIS SHOULD BE easy, no reafing involved and it should part the bell housing from the block. you might be able to do it with one screw driver, but i fear that you have already flogged it to much for that. be gentle, it is really hard to get it off otherwise
this is looking from underneath through the lower inspection plug

As I stated in my post, the Correct way is to push the fork to the pass side, insert the screw driver and gently twist
Try that, the image above is not too bad, the screw driver goes inbetween the red part above and the grey part which is a similar diam
In relation to manual parts, anything you want to sell of this wreck let me know, ie flywheel, shifter etc etc

then let the fork spring towards the motor or it may need a little help.
diagrams just to give you an idea, hope it helps.

Actually there will be extensive spare parts available from this project, being that i am converting it to electric drive. I will list them in a seperate forum post for any one that is interested. The parts are located in Brisbane.
Thanks Madmagna and Bellto ill try those methods tonight when i get home.
To anyone whos interested the full build of my project is here
