Hi all
i was driving tonight to a mates place when it felt like the gearbox dropped out, i was lucky enough to pull over to the side and get it towed home
now the issue is when it dropped out the engine was still had power it just was not getting to the wheels that is why i am thinking gearbox
i have contcted some mates that said it could be the oil for the gearbox being low
any help would be great
thanks

if its auto, check the fluid color and level, but it sounds like that the box is had it, due to the fact that it just dropped out. It could be the classic wave spring gone through the oil pump and snow balling the problem,
how many k's has the car done, and are there any other symptoms?
it could it also likely that it might be electrical. give a specific description of what its doing

If you have absolutely no drive in forward or reverse gears, and it happened suddenly with nil warning, and there was maybe just one 'crunch" sound that lasted only a moment or two..... THEN it is almost certainly a broken piece of "Wave Spring" which jammed the transmission oil-pump rotor against the stator. With engine power from input shaft driving the rotor, when rotor gets jammed it will shatter and pieces of this shattered rotor (like a cog) will flow into other areas of the transmission in the dying moments of oil flow.
Search forums for "wave spring" and you will probably recognise the same situation that some of us have had misfortune to experience. Here's an article from US transmission site, discussing the same gearbox as fitted to US models: http://www.transmissiondigest.com/tech/TD200508/200508ShiftPointers/200508ShiftPointers.htm
Labour is the killer with this issue. Whether fixing your box, or fitting a swap-in unit, labour cost will be great. You may get a first-class transmission from a wrecker etc, but how to avoid the same "dud" wave-spring in the replacement box is not so clear. Problem def affects vehicles of TJ and KJ series, dunno about earlier or later series. I paid $2200- to get my tranny reconditioned after this problem a couple of years ago - I wanted to keep my tranny cos it had only done 57K kms, and thought the rest of it must be in good nick. In my dad's car, family pulled box out and refitted, taking it to trans specialist for the rebuild - that cost $1000- plus lots of our own labour.

i had the sme thing happen to me driving home from work in mine. its definatly the wave spring in mine. when i start mine and put it in gear now the engine sounds like its engaged but still have no drive gears. hope yours is just a simple prob. i got quoted $2000 for a new box installed from the wreckers or $2500 for a rebuld.

My TJ did this to me. Normally the box would go into limp mode, but mine lost all gears completely like yours. I found the torque convertor was also stuffed when I got the box out, probably due to overheating when the oil pump failed.
Cheapest solution is a secondhand box from a wrecker ($400-$450). Since you don't know the history of the secondhand box, at least try to check the milage of the car it came from (lower the better) and pull the dip stick out to check the condition of the transmission oil (assuming it hasn't been drained). If the oil is a nice raspberry colour, you should be OK, but do regular flushes (at least yearly) to keep the box in good nick. If the oil is mid-dark brown it has been overheated which means less lubrication and more wear on the internal components. Try looking for another box.
Swapping the boxes over takes effort, decent tools, a hoist, time & beers.

Guys, I have several boxes here, all fairly low mileage going cheap at the moment, both 4 and 5 speed boxes
With the spring, generally when it lets go, it will find its way in bits to the Oil Pump and then the rotor on the pump breaks thus no fluid pressure, no drive

Mal , which gearboxes are prone to this problem? mine is april 2000 and still ok touch wood.

Its all about looking after the box and servicing and the box will be fine.

Same thing happened to the wife yesterday : <
Mad have sent you a PM,def interested in a box
Sorry,some background for Knowledge repository..
Tj magna Dual fuel Auto just ticked over 350,000 last week when I had several thoughts about life left in Tranny : <
Wife reports car just stopped on Derrimiut road Tarneit up near Dohertys and Luckily no accident on what can be a prick of a road.
Transmission has been serviced 3 times in 180000 km since we have owned the car.
Should have had maybe one more service in there but this spring(if thats what caused it) seems to be the weak link in an otherwise nice auto trans.
350,000 aint bad I suppose and the fact the wife is okay means quite a silver lining...now if I can get sorted through Mad for a Tranny this could be but a mere speed bump in the road of life .
Wondering what the most KMs on one of these Trannys is,anyone?

3 times in 180000km is poor servicing u should change the fluid every 20000km. Thats why the box would of went from lack of servicing. These boxes will last a long time if serviced my dads TE witch apparently had the shit auto box serviced and still going strong 370km origional.

I will tell you what happend with my car 2005 TW AWD LS, gearbox crapped itself in April I had to wait 54 days for a new one from os to be built for me. The transmission they put drives like new but it does not look 100% like the old one. Lucky for me this was a warranty job.

At least you got a "Brand New " box. I had to accept a locally remanufactured box of which 2 have already been installed with a third box going in next week. So if they've solved your problem on attempt one then you're ahead as I'm nearly up to the 3 month mark although only with out the car collectively about 2 weeks. I was told there are no "New" 4 speed boxes available but maybe since yours is more unique they still provide new ones. It took 31 days for a simple part like a harmonic balancer to arrive and be fitted on my car, nil stocks in Australia! A sign of hard times for mitsubishi I guess.
