View Full Version : Improving responsiveness - 3.5 TL

Just throwing a general question out there to those with the knowledge... what would be the best (read:
most cost effective) way to improve the responsiveness/pick up of a 3.5 4spd TL? I have already considered:
- ECU reflash
- High flowed T/B
- Upgrade the trans to a manual or 5spd auto
Thanks, D

RPW Cold Air Intake was the one that did it for me.

Manual and ECU reflash. Best bang for buck is reflash and you're in south australia anyway so drop by SKR. Don't waste your time with a flowed throttle body, just push your foot further.

What do you mean by "responsiveness"? Do you actually mean the time it takes from putting your foot down to the car actually moving?
Manual conversion
ECU reflash for more power, not sure it'll actually make it more "responsive"

I'm mainly talking about acceleration here - 'responsiveness' is what first came to mind.

Righteo, Personally I call that...making it go faster:P
List of things to do as has been proven time and time again
Manual conversion (no need for HD clutch)
Extractors - full exhaust system
Ralliart camshafts
SKR tune.

lol - it seems like SKR tuning is the ONE good thing sa has :P

Ralliart Cam's are great just had mine put in, the "response" comes on strong around 3g and then you can really feel it pull.
Looking at an SKR tune myself as I have heard nothing but great things.

Advance the timing when doing a belt change, also get rid of the timing difference between the front and rear banks.
Tidy up the throttle body lip.
Decent inlet manifold.
Extractors.
ECU TUne.

i will politely disagree with you
Extractors might make a bit of a difference. Inlet manifold? I havent seen proper proof that there is any gains to be made by changing the inlet manifold
Tidying up the throttle lip will do nothing, just put your foot down a tiny bit more
Timing differences isnt something i would reccomend anyone doing and should be left to the ecu tuner (in my opinion)

Correct, don't stuff with what you with what you dont know
I was led to believe the change in timing difference in cams is because of the exhaust system.....Like confirmation on that though
Adjustable cam gears are something to get aswell and get SKR to play with them when tuning.
Yeah intake manifold is fine for these motors.

From what I've read the original RA cams are getting quite scarce these days. Where did you source yours from - or are they simply the 380 ones? The 380s are very expensive to buy.
Value for $ is a key consideration for me - which is why I haven't gone the extractors route as they appear to give fairly little for what is a considerable outlay. Thanks all for your comments so far, keep 'em coming!!

Well, in an untuned car yes. Extractors, coupled with a free'r flowing exhaust and an SKR tune on top will yeild great results. Although the magna tune from factory is very good, he can still manage to get alot more power out of them
3.5L Manual, full exhaust and SKR tune your looking at 145kw's atw's
Add ralliart cams to that combo, and tune, and your looking at almost 155kw atw's
So your better off getting it all done at once and only paying to get it tuned once
