Order of Preference
Boston
Rockford
Clarion.
Boston have a great name in Car audio. Even their entry level gear sounds good.
If you like Thumping then the Rockford is right up your alley..
yeah i love thumping :D cheers mate

The only downside for Rockford is the price you pay for the power handling you get. Dont get me wrong though, their stuff is great and some of the excursion off their stuff is just insane. Maybe browse youtube for some Excursion videos.

I am slightly bias but if I was on a budget I would go Boston Fronts, Clarion Amps and RF Subs.
The reason - often mixing and matching brands will yield a better result than just one brand for the money.
Best thing you are doing is auditioning different types and brands.

Correct about mix and matching but i dont think RF is a good budget brand, where as a brand like Soundstream is abit pricier but the power handling you get with it is just phenomenal compaired to the price-rms ratio of RF.

I wouldn't take RMS ratings an indication of how loud something is.
I had a Boston G5 which was rated at 450WRMS ( RRP$799 ). Boston recommended it be powered by an amp capable of over 1000WRMS....

Yes but the Boston is quite a pricey sub, i am talking lower end, i know somethings can get loud of a little power but i just dont think thats RF's style. I always wanted a G5 hearing it can take that much power and still produce clean sound !
Also im pretty sure the G5 Retail is not about $499

Yes it was a good woofer but sadly it seems that it will not be made anymore.
The G3 is only RRP$399 and is similar - but not as good.
I had a G5 a while ago - got it at cost price and it was above the price you quoted above.
Personally I wouldn't get an RF sub anyways :D
any reason you wouldnt go with rockford mr char?

The reason i wouldnt use RF Subs is because they are more SPL Subs, which means they are LOUD Thumping subs not so much focused on Sound Quality which i assume MR C is into. Plus the price !
ahh kk, i was thinking he might have known a issue with them i didnt lol. so if i lied deep thumping bass they might just be what im after :D but there wouldnt be that much of a quality drop in the sound i would assume right?

They are good for Quality aswell so if you have the money and are set on Rockford Fosgate then knock you self out.

Yeah there is nothing wrong with RF gear in regards to build quality and reliability.
I have just never been happy with their subs that I have auditioned ( or more the point there was something better for the $$$ ).
This is why auditioning is so important - if you like something go for it!

Flog them all off and get your hands on a DD (digital designs)
Price v RMS is a terrible comparison, you could get a 50w speaker which would sound better and/or play louder than a 200w speaker. Its down to materials used and the effiency of the speaker amongst many other things.

As far as i know RF subs take alot to get thumping since most of their subs focus on crazy excursions, meaning less efficient.
