Hi All,

I just purchased a 2005 TW ES II Magna Wagon. 122K kms. It had been used as a commercial vehicle, but has a full service history. The dealer did the timing belt as part of the deal. I've just had all the fluids replaced by the service guys I usually use. The mechanic said there is a "slight lifter noise". Is this likely to be a problem ? Expensive to fix ?
The wagon has definitely had a harder life then my wife's 2004 KL Verada AWD (bought when 12mths old with 20K kms), and my 2004 TL AWD Magna (bought when 3 years old with 60K kms).

As you might guess, we like Magnas ! :)

Depends. Keep an eye (ear) on it. Use an engine flush next time you change the oil. If it gets worse you might need to get the lifters looked at. The worst case scenario (I'm going through this now) is that one of the lifters has become pitted and has damaged the valve stem, head needs to come off to replace the valve. Not likely in your case, my car has 240,000 Km on it.

My TF Wagon is the same. when you start the start up no lifter sound and then every once in a while you can hear them. In the last service I gave it I had used 3L 10-30 with 1.5L proma and the lifter noise stopped.

Thanks for the replies. Done a bit of Googling tonight, and seems to be a pretty common problem with these motors, but not something to get too worried about.

I also use Nulon performance engine treatment at oil changes, helps alot to keep the lifter noise down.

Lifters getting a bit sloppy with age and rattling a bit at hot idle is much better than the alternative, having them gum up, pump up and burning exhaust valves and seats. Red Holden 202 motor was real good at doing this when exhaust pollution gear was first introduced way back. Go for a long country drive, arrive home, find the car has no power and you've lost 3 cylinders - again. Ho hum, the good old days!

November this year apparently. I've sent an email to Mitsubishi to see if they can confirm.

mine's out this month. Get what you can done. I got new front shocks, oil leaks at rocker cover, new (rebuilt ) trans and tailgate struts done recently. maybe you can get the lash adjusters if you're lucky. Don't expect them to tell you what needs warranty get in before it's gone.

How did you go about getting that stuff done ? I'm going to see if RACQ have some 'pre-warranty expiry' type inspection, which I think if they found anything the dealer would be unable to fob me off on.

well I'm pretty pedantic. I simply asked + I have full service history and services done by Mitsubishi will can help when things are marginal.
oil was seeping out of rockers and hitting exhaust so repaired. front shocks were noisy , lots of knocking noises and bump stops were shagged. pedders did not even fault these or find the bump stops. Mitsubishi test drove and found them very noisy, so replaced (beautiful). Tailgate struts had an sticky oily residue seeping so i suggested they could be leaking , replaced but probably lucky to get away with that one. Gearbox has had an issue with 2-3 shift flare and shock + 1-2 was starting to do the same. It took me over 2 years and 3 dealerships for that one. Sometimes you get lucky and find someone who's interested in fixing stuff.

Other things to look for are
1: Internal cracking of side indicators in guards allowing water in. Both sides replaced twice.
2: Corrosion/bubbling under black protective finish of roof rails(especially mounts) replaced 3 times
3: Faulty or intermittent tiptronic switches in gear selector. Gear selector assembly replaced 3 times.
4: Steering wheel replaced due to unbonding of grip.

I've also had replaced, front exhaust y-pipe, cruise control vacuum pump, antenna mast , harmonic balancer (separation), passenger airbag (warping) and one fuel cap.

My vehicle currently has 94 K.
