Hey guys,
Thanks to Mad Lanté's guide to removing a headliner on a TM/TP Magna, I got motivated to pimp mine up with black suede and an embossed design. Here is my guide:
Materials Required & Cost
====================
1 350g Can of Spray Adhesive $12.90
1.5mx2m "Sherpa Back Suede" in your favorite color $11/meter = $22.00
6 Sheets of Foam padding $5.95
-All of the above items I got at "Spotlight" fabric shop. Not a bad place for a perve either.
Preparing the Original Headliner
=======================
1) Remove all the "holy ****" bars (the handles on the roof) by popping the screw cover off at each end and unscrewing.
2) Remove the centre light by popping off the perspex cover and unscrewing
3) Pop the cover off the rear view mirror and unscrew, do the same for the sun visors
4) Remove the trimming that covers the pillars at each corner of the interior by giving them a good pull from the edges.
5) Remove the trimming running along the sides and front and rear by pulling down and towards the outside of the car. Be careful to distribute the force along the trim so you dont snap it.
-Once all the trim is off, the whole headliner should fall down off the roof. From the outside of the car, pull it out through the rear door with the front seats folded back. You will have to fold it along the middle to make it fit out the door
6) Pull off the original fabric if it hasnt already fallen off.
7) The original foam on my headliner was easy to get off as it was all perished. You can basically rub all over the it with your hand and it will disintergrate. Then use the a large brush of some kind to sweep vigourously over the surface and remove any traces of the original foam, especially round the curves near the rear view.
Making the new headliner
===================
1) Work out what design you want embossed on your headliner. I chose a large mitsubishi logo covering the backseat area of the headliner. Cut your design out of foam, using two layers if your want it to be really obvious. The mitsubishi logo is three diamonds with interior angles of 60*. All the sides are the same length.
2) Measure out the middle of the headliner and put your foam design where it needs to be.
3) Lay the suede loosly over the headliner and start smoothing it out from the bottom as a test to make sure you have enough length and width.
4) Fold the bottom half of the suede up till your design is visible, and stick the design onto the headliner by spraying both surfaces with the adhesive, waiting till both surfaces are tacky and pressing them together.
5) Now stick the suede on the headliner in horizontal sections. Spray a stripe of headliner and suede, wait to become tacky and then press together. Repeat up the length of the headliner until you have glued it all down. Make sure you press the material right into the corners.
6) Wait for the glue to dry overnight and cut the overhanging suede off as close as you can around the headliner.
-I also had to reglue some foam bits that had come off the top side of the headliner... the spray adhesive worked fine for this.
Finishing Off
=========
1) Installation is a reverse of the removal process. Put the headliner in the clips first, then the trimming over the top, then all the screw in bits.
2) Go round the edges with a nail file or something to tuck in any loose bits into the trim.
3) SHA-MONE.
