Hey guys,
I'm thinking about getting the Redback cat-back exhaust system on my TJ 3.5 litre. Thing is, I've already got the Lukey LR2779 Straight-Through rear muffler on there.
It appears that the package comes in two parts:

Anyone know if it's possible just to get STR361 and use my current Lukey muffler? Or do I need that piece of pipe there on the redback muffler...? (Seems wasteful and unnecessary if I did)
Oh, I've also got an Oval Tip on the end as you can see in my avatar, does this change the note or sound at all?
Cheers,

Redback will bolt onto a std muffler thus you should be fine
Make sure your part number is the TJ one as the 3.0 ones are different length and will cause you issue
Another note, watch the centre muffler for cracking and the system in general for corrosion as most I have seen that are over a couple years, one in question 18 months old, were near throw away items due to the system only being painted and no galv or zinc coatings being used

Thanks Mal,
in saying that, if I bought a system should I zinc coat it or get it treated myself?
I'll have to get under the car, I'm pretty sure the Exhaust Shop I had the Lukey put on welded it on, the model I got wasn't the bolt-on but rather the weld-on.
If so, I guess I'll have to take it to a shop get them to flange everything.
I've done the exact same thing as you want to do mate.
I've got the redback centre section and the lukey rear section. The lukey normally comes as a bolt on rear section, EVEN THOUGH you've had yours welded on, you still have to remember it will be a section still because they all came in sections from the factory. If you jack up your car you will see the flange behind your rear wheel behind the brake caliper. So you should be fine just getting the middle section and bolting it on yourself. Otherwise an exhaust shop wont charge you much to bolt it on.
P.S. Def go the lukey rear as the redback system is pretty quiet overall.

Excellent, thanks Neo.
I'll have to get the axle-back piping done by the exhaust shop and the Lukey Muffler rewelded I suppose, don't want it bottlenecking
Anyone have any information on treating the exhaust system from red back to be more durable?
I'm guessing this may be more expensive than to just get an exhaust shop to custom make you one?

I work at exhaust shop and if you want it to last buy stainless steel also the flanges may not meet up with your luke muffler

How much would a stainless cat-back minus rear muffler be you reckon?

like neo said redback mufflers are quiet, also why do want to change the mid section you would be better off getting extractors, high flow cat and running straight pipe in stead of the middle muffler your choice and depends on your budget, but will get you a quote on all of the above plus cat back in stainless where are you from im from parramatta and factory is in leichardt p.s im using a universal super cat muffler sounds nice but does drown alot

The redback replaces the middle muffler with a hot dog reso. I don't want the thing to be raspy or tinny so a straight pipe wouldn't be recommended?
I have a high flow cat from Magnaflow ready to be put on as well.
Link to the cat: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-91006/
I figured I'd do the cat back system mandrel bent 2.5 and a high flow cat and do extractors later on.
I wanna get ceramic coated so it'll be a while before I can afford them comfortably.
I'm in Strathfield area so it's smack bang in the middle of Parra and Leichardt.

I'd prefer it to be modest on idle, enough to know the Magna means business but not necessarily head turning and hugely noticeable.
However, on WOT I want the thing to cause earthquakes and tectonic movement.
The point being, I want a loud exhaust but I don't want to get headaches when driving around normally lol

When I clicked on link it just showed the ceramic honeycomb std universal Catalytic Converter, Stainless Steel, Universal, 2 1/2 in. Inlet/Outlet, 13 in. Length, US$63.27 each (cheap in the US ). Did you get it from the US or buy locally and how much was it here? How many Cell Per Inch (CPU) is it? Std is usually about 400CPU with High flow generally 200CPU and High Flow racing 100CPU. Many would recommend using metal cat i.e. a metal honeycomb rather than ceramic honeycomb for the active chemical conversion substrate made from rare metals such as platinum etc to be bonded too.
I'm not sure this is high flow or any better than your stock one.

Hey Ish, got it off eBay and it was $125.
As for CPI or CPU I'll send him a message, I'm quite sure it's 200, I'll just confirm.
As for ceramic vs metal, is there a large difference?
Seems like it costs roughly twice the amount for a no brand steel cat converter from eBay.

Got a reply:
Hi there,
This is a ceramic high flow, Magnaflow do not supply a CPSI rating on these.
-
Had a look on the Skyline forums, seems a few of them use these cats to drive around in.
Can't go wrong in the Magna then?

My bad - Cells Per Square Inch (CPSI) not CPU (it was posted after 03:00 AM LOL) . As long as its rated high flow and no smaller than your current one it should be better than stock.

Yeah. I'm thinking if turbo Skylines are cruising around with them, an NA Magna would see maybe a fraction of a kW gain from a metal cat.

Well made metal cats last a lot longer is all no performance gains over ceramic that I know of. Ceramic ones tend to break down over a long period or quickly if overheated or by running too rich as modded cars often are.

I would avdvise against this, I know of a member how despite being told countless times not to do this by an exhaust shop not to remove the centre muffler, had them remove it and then spent several months complaining about the sound with the muffler removed. The car will sound like a wet fart with a heap of drone.
Perhaps with the right rear muffler, you may get a reasonable sound but i still doubt that as well

The redback replaces the centre muffler with a hot dog from what I hear.
I'm definitely not wanting to go no reso or muffler and just a straight pipe.
I'm not a fan of hugely loud mufflers unless it's on WOT
