View Full Version : Getting snapped bolts out

Putting my guard back on today I managed to snap two of the bolts off (yes I know I should have used a torque wrench before anyone starts! :facepalm)
Whats the best way to get them out? Drill them out with a smaller drill bit?
Also managed to strip the thread while putting one of the transmission cooling pipes onto a new radiator today too and now it's dripping tranny fluid when I turn the car on. Any suggestions on how to get around that one too?

Ouch....for the radiator try tapping it with a tap and die set. For the gaurds, drill the center out a bit and use some "easy outs" to unscrew them (about $5-$15 depending where you get them from) and you SHOULD be right.

Guards aren't structurally stressed, so you can just drill a hole down the centre of the snapped off bit and screw a self tapping screw down there. Might not be visible if you are lucky.

I'm with Max...just drill that sucker... I drilled out a snapped bolt in my door mirrors as well as the little jig that stops the doors from flinging open.....use a small bit through the centre.... ;)

Nice idea but I would never do that
Drill out a smaller hole, centre punch first to get centre
If the easyout does not work, which sometimes they do not as the old bolt thread expands with the easyout, you can drill out larger (not as large as the bolt which is 6mm) and then re tap the thread
im with madmagna on this one, getting a centre mark makes it alot easier in my books, and save it for when you havnt tipped a carton of grog into ya, i found the hard way its hard to do when ya cant hold ya drill straight
