Hay all

Im gonna be sending my ecu to steve night soon. I was gonna leave my ecu in my car. My mate has a TJ S2 auto and manual ecu will these be fine to be tuned and refitted in my car? Is the ecu in 2 parts or is it one whole unit? Were is it located and is it easy to remove and refit?

Thanks Kurt

My understanding is that the TJ and later ECUs are sufficiently different from the TH and earlier ECUs that they're effectively not interchangeable without a loom changeover (TJ+ ECU goes hand in hand with BEM). Also, I seem to recall seeing references to SKR having to do a lot of number conversion on the TH and earlier ECUs to update the maps, due to the software not being as advanced.

I don't know about the TH ECUs, but the TJ and later ECUs also control at least some functions of the auto transmission and so there are different ECU part numbers (being different ROM images) for each transmission combo (4A/5A/5M) as well as some other options such as TCL, cruise and Sports/VR-X (if the tunes are different as some sources suggest). The immobiliser code is also in the TJ & later ECUs, and swapping ECUs (option requirements aside) requires deactivating the immobiliser (which I believe SKR and MadMagna can both do) or updating the immobiliser code in the new ECU.

If it were me, I'd be looking for an ECU out of a TH with the same engine/transmission as yours to use temporarily, and send your car's ECU to SKR.

Optimally, find the part number on your ECU to match it to another one. Far as I've heard, with a TH you won't have to worry about the immobiliser.

I'm lead to believe on the 3rd gens the ECU is under the dash approximately in line with the centre console, in a position where leaking heater seals result in the ECU being doused... Have no idea (yet) how hard to change...

BTW, I'd get in touch with SKR well before sending anything to confirm everything is going to work out.

You need to ask Madmagna, I recall he has put TJ EC's into his TF. There is no physical difference between the TH and TJ units, just the transmission types such as Manual, 4sp, tippy 4 and 5 speed. you do not need the BEM if you switch off the immobiliser.
The only difference between the TJ and TH modules is that Steves and Mals Mut-II can read in directly into the TJ, wheras Steve has the correct gear from MMAL to interface with the TH. It needs to be reprogramed in hexadecimal and so is much more time consuming. Plenty of threads on this such as:

TH and J ECU can be swapped as the BEM started in the TH series, I am running a TJ Manual ECU with a TH manual loom in by TE.....confused now??? The TJ can be used with a TF harness if not locked however you will have the check engine light on due to the Barra sensor not being in the TF harness and airflow

The manual and auto ECU can not be swapped without the engine harness being changed

If you have a TH or later, send a spare ECU to Steve, keep yours as it matches your BEM and keys. Steve will also remove the immob when he flashes the new ECU thus no need to worry about the BEM or Keys not matching

My apologies to the original poster for the duff info - better quality info duly noted.
