Just wondering. I'm redoing the heads on the 12 valve V6 and am currently waiting for the workshop to phone me.(Hurry up guys) While cleaning the block I noticed that hone marks are still visible in the bores, and there is no wear ridge at the top of the bore. Surprising considering the engine has done 240,000 km. The pistons are marked "72H" on the crowns. Is this the standard piston marking, or has the engine been rebored at some stage by a previous owner? I think Mitsu uses "S" to denote standard size pistons.

Can anyone confirm that "72H" pistons are oversize?

Bumpsky McBump !

All back together and $1,200 later is running well. A bit much $ wise seeing all that has changed is a fixed oil leak, new exhaust valves and a set of lifters, as well as the usual head reface and seat cut, and the dismantle/assemble labour was free. (mine). Smoother idle and no top end rattle, no leaks evident. Still blowing a bit of smoke under the bonnet from a cracked front exhaust manifold. Guess it comes from the number 5 cylinder having 2 broken off manifold studs for ages. Now has helicoils and bolts holding it on. I can live with a cracked manifold for the moment, on the "to do" list along with rings for next time, if there is a next time. TS V6 is a bitch to work on, you need to do things in the right order, so you spend a lot of time sussing out the right sequence. Normal for a first time V6 top end job I suppose. Chalk it up as a learning experience. At least I'm getting faster at setting up the cams and getting the cam belt back on, done twice in less than 500 km. lol I guess the third gen motors are no better/easier to work on.

Still wondering about the hone marks still being visible after 240,000 Km, though.

You idiot, I have a DOHC 24v sitting here you could of had for $400. Needed a hone and gasket kit. for the $1200 least you would of had some balls under the bonnet!
