First post here - hello everyone. I'm an absolute car dud so pleae be gentle.

Funds have been a bit low for the past couple of years so have neglected our '98 Magna Executive station wagon. The engine is now sounding pretty rough so time for a service.

Have been quoted $170 for a minor service and $300 for a more comprehensive service (spark plugs etc). Sounds OK but I guess it depends on what else needs to be done.

Any recommendations for cheap places in inner east, north east of Melbourne would be greatly appreciated.

The car is also making a god-awful rattling noise when turning corners. CV joints I gather. This place has quoted around $145 each plus labour. How does that sound?

Thanks

im not sure on the general service price, but for the CVs that sounds reasonable, as they are annoying to change

As you're in melbourne I would recommend talking to Mal (MadMagna), he knows these cars as well as anyone and has a workshop located in melbourne.

firstly welcome to the club. cv prices sound about right in my area. service is piss easy to do and your better of spending trhe money on the parts and do it yourself its not hard. heres a link to the service manual for your car, very easy to follow http://www.lisho.net/?page_id=3 just download the book and your away. as mentioned madmagna runs a workshop in that area somewhere, this link is to the general priceing for his services taken from these very forums http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72817

Apparently the drive shafs need replacing. Wife took it up to a local place and they quoted $650 to replace both the front two. Does that sound reasonable.

BTW, wouldn't attempt to do this myself...I haven't got a single bit of auto-logic in me.
