Just wondering if anyone knows if 235-40-18 rubber is going to fit onto a 7" wide rim?
Went into beaurepaires and the guy i talked to there seemed to think they should, but just want to get a second opinion before i buy these. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-235-40-18-TYRES-FEDERAL-595-SS-/250640650620?cmd=ViewItem&pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a5b58d17c

Thanks.

Are these for a Magna? If so, it doesn't matter if they'll fit or not, as the load rating, (91) is illegal for a 94/95 load rated car.

The item specs show load rating 94, then the seller's blurb shows load rating 91.
Might be worth shooting him an email to clarify. Price seems good though.
Also, many tyre fitters will say that 235 is too wide for a 7" rim and you need at least a 7 1/2" rim to be legal.

Just to confirm, if you check the tyre and rim association guide book.. 225 is the max width for a 7", 235 works but is not legal - consensus we came to in another thread. Ask a tyre shop they will have a copy.

It will work fine just mind it is potential grounds for insurance being void, etc.

If 225 is the max width tyre on a 7" rim, what's the max width tyre on a 6" rim?
I tried to find this guide book, but it looks like you have to actually buy it.

Because Mitsubishi put 215s on my 6" wide rims. I would assume that if a car manufacturer puts 215s on 6" width rim, than a 20mm wider tyre should go onto a 25mm wider wheel without issues. But IMO ask a couple of different tyre fitters as they are the ones that should know. Does anyone here work in this industry?

Commodores have 205s on their 6" stockies. 215s wouldnt be a push i dont think

But you're talking about 16"s with 60 profile tyres. Big difference.

Don't run 235mm rubber on a 7" wide rim, coming from someone who's done that in the past.

You will get excessive sidewall flex under hard cornerning, meaning less grip and crap handling. Also the tyre will wear unevenly due to 'crowning' on the rim.

225 is the max legal/recomended tread width you can run on a 7" wide rim, but personally I would run 215mm because you will get better handling/grip in the corners due to better sidewall stiffness.

errr well i know you will be able to run 235's on a 7" rim as iv got 245(front), 255(rear) on a 7.5" ... and my tyre has even wear and seems to handle fine :S

Just because you're doing that and it seems to handle fine, doesn't mean it's the best idea. There's a reason why we have minimum recomended and legal rim widths for tyres...you compromise a tyre performance's by running an insifficiently wide rim, safety as well with more extreme mis-matches.

Throw some 215 or 225mm tyres on your 7.5" rim and I'm sure you'll see the light and never run 245/55 on them again.

I use to run a set of 235mm tyres on 7" wide rims, then put them onto new 8" wide rims, and the difference in grip, handling and wear was VERY noticeable.
