View Full Version : Can I go lower?

Probably a stupid question, but I had my car lowered whilst I was still on 15 inch rims. I then chucked 17s on it. Due to putting bigger rims on, can I lower it some more and still be legal?

Cheers

Nevermind, just called Pedders, and they said I couldn't. I didn't think so, just wanted to be sure.

WTF?! Yes you can...

Pedders are useless, look into Lovells Superlows.

+1 Pedders are useless. What was the reason they gave you?

Speaking solely from a legal perspective (so disregarding any clearance issues etc) your choices of rims/tyres has NO correlation with your suspension whatsoever.

The ONLY thing you have to look out for is that if your tyres are a smaller diameter than stock, it may bring your car closer to the ground. If you already had your car lowered to exactly 100mm off the ground, and then went and put smaller diameter tyres on, you'd obviously be too low. However, this is easily overcome by putting on tyres that are closer to the original diameter.

Having said that, the above isn't really applicable to you since you already have your desired rims/tyres on. Lower away to your hearts (and the laws) content!

I took his advice.

I love it and hate it, just have to remember to slant all driveways, ramps and bulges lol

Well, the guy said they check the ride height by measuring from the center of the rim to the ground (which I have heard before). Seeing as the 17 inch rims are the same diameter as the 15 inch rims, it does make sense that it couldn't legally be made lower (seeing as it is already at the lowest legal height, and 17 inch rims wouldn't make it any higher).

The main concern is legality. If I were to get defected I probably couldn't afford to buy new springs to make it a legal height again. If i was going to make it lower, it would be by compressing the current springs. Any reason as to why I shouldn't go down that path?

I'm assuming laws are different in every state. I'm unsure as to what the SA laws are.

That doesn't sound right. SA's guide to suspension modification is available here (http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/pdfs/personal_transport/light_vehicles_pdfs/MR1136_Requirements_for_Lowering_or_Raising_Vehicl e_Ride_Height.PDF). I'm not sure about the mid-point rule - I've never heard of it before - so as long as you keep the vehicle more than 100mm above the ground you should be OK.

jesse they measure from the centre of the wheel to the guard. but at the same time u need to have a 100mm ground clearance all round.

UMM regardless of anything, this measurement wont change. Think about it. I knoe in SA there is some rule about not reducing the height from the centre of the mag to the gaurd by 50mm or more. Somehting odd like that.

Also in SA, the front & rear must be raised or lowered by the same amount.

Ahhhh yes, that's right. I thought center of the rim of the ground wasn't right, has nothing to do with ride height.

Hahaha, you have a club suspension set? I did not know that.

Yea but really how often does this get checked. As long as your car isn't stupidly low you'll get by fine. Check out Life's and Big_Will's cars, thats about as low as you'll wanna go. But for legality, performance and not looking like a tool when going over speed humps a hight similar to mine or Peter_pans is generally good. I dont have to Leb' angle it over humps, just plow into them and everything is peachy.
