Just thinking about the possibility of putting 6x9's in my front doors? Anybody know if its possible or even worth while doing??
Just a thought, would'nt mind hearing a few thoughts on it.... :D

I am no way near an expert but I would have thought having the traditional circular speakers would give you more quality sound in general over 6x9's (esp for your money?). I could be talking out of my arse it is just my first thought.

Possible: Yes, Easy: Yes, Feasible: Maybe.
You would need mount the speaker onto the inner door trim; the inner skin wouldn't have a suitable flat surface of metal to accomodate a 6x9. Also with such a large speaker you would really need to sound deaden the door to eliminate rattles. It will give relatively good bass which is good for front stage, but in terms of sound quality it will only be average. Don't forget you will need to cut ugly oval holes in the door trim that are later irrepairable.
Magmag is right re cone shape; for best SQ the cone should be equal dimensions along the 2 axis so there is less cone flex. Square, hexagon, pentagon speakers are still based upon a circular design so don't have too big a problem with this.
Consider a 6.5" speaker? Its cone area is probably only about 20% smaller than a 6x9 but would give better sound.

A circular cone on a driver is gonna sound better than an oval shaped one (ie. a 6x9 or 7x10). The reason 6x9s even exist is so car manufacturers could fit a greater amount of cone on the parcel shelf of sedans, thus providing more low-end. The problem with an oval cone is that it will distort before a round cone will, due to its shape.
Maybe you should look into splits? Nice low end, quality crossovers and tight, sparkling highs.

If is worth while doing?
No.
Ha well some guy wants to use 128 pairs of 6x9's in a wall for db racing on CAA. lol
Now that would be interesting...

sorry to hi-jack but link here (http://www.caraudioaustralia.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=37300) to that 128 6x9's guy.

128 6x9s if set up and aimed correctly could probably generate a LOT of sound but only at a specific location (where you'd place the mic for the drag)... It would probably have a response curve as peaky as mt everest but hey, it serves its purpose :D

Hey Mark, no :belt: going on here. I never really thought about it until you mentioned it. I hope to get my system installed within the upcoming weeks (when my bank balance recovers a bit!). I am really not sure whether to try doing the whole install myself or go the easier path. I know very little about what I am doing in the audio dept. but I am getting there, the forum and its members are helping me heaps. Regards.

hay, personally, i wouldn't do it. But my cousin has 4 6x9's in his car with an amp running each one of them (4, 2 channel amps), and it sounds awsome.

Cool....maybe 3 or 4 way 6x9's in the doors might be ok in order to get some of the higher frequencies??

In my tp wagon i have 6x9's in the front, put in before i got it, but it was done at bris car sound all it is just a spacer with some material matching the botton of the doors and they are brought out. Personally, they are ok, nothing special (pioneer 3 ways of some sort), but do the job fine. For ease your better off with splits or just round 6"'s as the others said. Oh the other thing with 6x9's there....mine are on the verge of coming off (mainly cos bris car sound didnt screw in speakers properly, only into the thin bit of wood, can u call it wood lol?)
and so if u enter or exit the car and hit with your foot its coming off...but in saything that, if its all done properly, it will be fine.

If they are going to be installed into your front doors.. the only thing would be to high pass them, so that they don't play any of the lower frequencies. Leave that job to your subs.. If you have some..
But in all seriousness.. a set of 6" splits in front is perfect! 6" Compression Horns in the rear, as rear fill and 1 or 2 x 12" Sub(s) running the splits and subs off seperate amps and running the horns off the Head Unit!

If you have some..And if you have subs, then you wouldn't bother with 6x9s as the only advantage they have over a 6" is their lower frequency response. Splits are the way to go methinks.
