So its using oil. Most cars do. Get someone to drive behind you through town and on the open road, and see if it blows blue smoke at any time. Blue smoke is hard to pick from the driver's seat. It has to be really bad to emit a constant cloud. How much is it using? Anything up to 1 L per 3,000 km is ok. Short of an engine rebuild with new rings, a hone and new valve stem seals, you just put up with it. Cheaper to add more oil. lol I just did a top end rebuild to stop a massive oil leak as well as lifter clatter, cost me $1200 and didn't touch the bottom of the engine.

Currently using Castrol Magnatech 10w40 put about 2l in after 8000km or so.

Also wondering if the lifters need doing have heard this can be an issue with magna. Sounding very rough when cold. Also can hear some clatter when running around town once engine warmed up. Is that normal for a magna that needs the lifters done. Mine is probably using about the 1l per 3000km.

What sort of noise when cold and what sort of noise when warm/clatter?

Does it sound like a grumble/groan under light acceleration? If so, this is an easy fix by tightening your a/c belt.

Would recommend a thicker oil as well. People recomend and i also run Penrite HPR15. This may help your usage of oil. My awd als used a bit as well and i was also running magnatec. Changed to penrite which instantly helped/solved the problem. Worth a shot. If it gets better but still using a little, then go to HPR30.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip on the thicker oil will look into that. When it is cold its a really rough sounding rattle or clatter which will goes away in 20 seconds or so, or if it is turned it off and started again. Always rougher when it is cold. Slight ticking when it is warm.

The noise sounds like lifters not holding pressure. My lifter clatter was caused by one of the lifters pitting on the rubbing surface. It might be worthwhile to pull them out and clean them (as per manual procedure, using diesel fuel) and replacing any that are damaged or not holding pressure. If the ends of the valve stems are hammered or rough, heads need to come off. You could experiment with different oils and oil additives (as I did) and hope the oil consumption or clatter improves. My engine is a gen 2 3.0L with 240,000 on it though, so some wear and tear was to be expected. Currently it uses about 1L between 5,000 Km oil changes, which is ok. Using 20W-50 oil.
